Rise Together Education would like to end this year on a happy note by featuring another motivated and positive young person, Ryan Mendoza (Paly's Class of 2017). Ryan is graduating early this month from the The University of LaVerne where he majored in Kinesiology. Ryan had a soccer scholarship, held a part time job, and attended college full time! Ryan is currently applying to graduate schools to study to become an Occupational Therapist. We are also thrilled that Ryan has found a way to give back to his community by agreeing to join RTE’s Peer Mentoring Program led by our RTE Alumni and Board Members: Stephanie Estrada and Sammuel Vasquez. We are proud to have been a part of Ryan’s spectacular achievement and that Ryan seeked help and received generous support from our surrounding community.

“The scholarship has completely helped me in so many ways. To name only a few, I will begin by simply pointing to the obvious one which is… financially --- by having this extra amount of money. I have more time to focus on my academics and therefore work 5 hours less per week this semester. That has been amazing given the fact that I am a student athlete and do not have to stress 24/7!”

Are you in the field of physical or occupation therapy and would like to share your experience with Ryan? We'd love to connect you with him!

Below is an excerpt from a recent interview with Ryan.

What has been the best part about going to college?

I believe the best part about going to college has been making vital connections with my peers and expanding my knowledge by doing so.

Has RTE made a difference in your decision to pursue a college degree?

RTE has really helped me by pushing me to finish school and pursue my education to better help my future.

Has RTE helped you get to college (financially and otherwise)?

RTE has helped me a lot financially with my college expenses and believed in my skills even when I didn't... which motivated me to keep going even when I didn't want to.

Did any adults help/support you in the process of getting to college?

I had much support from my family and loved ones that helped me get into college by being by my side and helping me pick which colleges best worked for me. I also had help from counselors at Foundations for a College Education (FCE) when it came to writing my personal statement.

Did RTE make a difference in helping you decide your post-Paly plans?

RTE does help students help decide post-PALY plans if you reach out but I was also fortunate enough to be in an afterschool program FCE, which helped me with this path a lot more and it was a very unique experience.

Do you have an idea of what you want to do after college?

After college, I plan to continue pursuing my education and getting my Occupational Therapy degree so I can start advancing in my field of work! I also have dreams of starting a soccer coaching career and starting up a scholarship fund for students of color, preferably first generation college students, who struggle to pay for their college education!
