By Jessie Emerson: Shel Neymark gave a short talk at our Luncheon when the legislature was in session. We were encouraged to contact our representatives about the Rural Library Endowment. This would give the state’s libraries about $45,000 per year.

Speaking to the Imagination exhibition features handmade artists’ books and works on paper from local, national, and international artists and writers of note. Each work on display reflects a compelling artistic vision combining words and art, as well as a distinctive take on book artistry.

Book of Cranes is an accordion book 24 in. x 32 in. x 5 in. It is 16 ft. open, extended, with original art, calligraphy, and poetry on handmade paper contained in a clamshell box.

AUGUST 31: WRITING CONTEST DEADLINE
David Morrell Award for Unpublished Fiction and Anne Hillerman Award for Unpublished Non-Fiction. Winners will be announced at the Albuquerque Museum Foundation’s “A Celebration of Writing” on Friday, November 8, 2019, 3:30 p.m., at the Albuquerque Museum Auditorium. Click for details. 

SEPTEMBER 14: JANET BRENNAN PRESENTATION

Author and publisher Janet K. Brennan will be giving a presentation on September 14, 8 a.m., at the Albuquerque Hotel in Old Town Albuquerque at a writing conference hosted by SouthWest Writers in conjunction with Military Writers Society of America. She will be speaking on “Character Development in Historical Fiction.” She will also be mentoring throughout the conference on the same subject as well as on publishing, writing poetry, writing music, and how to get from here to there. The conference runs from Thursday, Sept. 12, to Sunday, Sept. 15.

SEPTEMBER 15: NANCY BARTLIT SPEAKS ON "CULTURAL CONFLICTS"

NMBA member Nancy Bartlit will speak on “Cultural Conflicts: When Sons of the Land of Enchantment Met Sons of the Land of the Rising Sun,” to Friends of the Coronado Historic Site, on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at 2:00 p.m., at DeLavy House, 151 Edmund Road, Bernalillo, nm NM 87004. We may tell them only to ourselves, but we create them and willingly let them carry us into narratives where meaning is made. While no particular diagnosis can stereotype writers, we can articulate a few characteristics that many writers share.

Did you know that 72% of Santa Fe students are not able to read proficiently at grade level? Reading Quest began in 2012 when Governor Martinez wanted to hold back third grader who were not reading at grade level. My middle school students at Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences started a citywide literacy campaign called Hooked on Books that focused on teens encouraging and inspiring young kids to get hooked on reading.

Pukiyary has recently published El Hotel Que la Habitaba (The Hotel that Inhabited Her), by our member Luis Fernández-Zavala, PhD. This is a collection of six stories in Spanish whose actions happen in Peru, northern France, and in the fictional town of San Juan in New Mexico. This is the second book of short fiction written and published by Fernández-Zavala. The books are available on Amazon.com (in print and on Kindle) and at op cit books and Allá in Santa Fe. The official book launch will be at The National Hispanic Cultural Center (Albuquerque) on September 6, 6 p.m., and is sponsored by the Consulate of Peru.
