Good morning to the lovely readership of Logging On . Thank you for joining me in the monthly endeavor of me eating my way through some of YEG’s top local fare. For those new around these parts - welcome! To give a quick rundown of the program, each month we’ll be looking at a specific type of food/dish/type of cuisine. I’ll be giving my two cents about my favourite things that fall under the month’s theme, plus we’ll put some shine on some other honourable mentions that didn’t quite medal this month in the uMAHmi column. This month we wake up to the delectable category of breakfast sandwiches. How does that saying go? “You can’t write a column without breaking a few eggs?” meal check Breakfast is the most the most important meal of the day. Does this make a breakfast sandwich the most important sandwich of the day? I’d argue yes. Honestly I’m not a big breakfast guy, but for as long as I remember my preferred way to enjoy the first meal of the day is in sandwich form. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s mobile, and it usually doesn’t comprise too much in regards to additional sleep-in time (catch me half asleep in the drive through). I’ve always enjoyed a breakfast sandwich - from when I was a little kid getting one as a treat after an early morning mall walk with my grandparents, to the much needed sustenance it gave my friends and I after our 8AM classes in first year university. Guess what I’m trying to say here is I’ll never say no to a breakfast sandwich. What better way to start off your day than with a nutritionally balanced breakfast sandwich – it has your freshly toasted carbs, some fried protein, possibly a slice of calcium, and sometimes a dash of some veggies if you're lucky (HITTING ON ALL LEVELS OF HEALTHY FOOD PYRAMID LIKE A PERFECT BINGO). My criteria for a breakfast sandwich is quite simple: It’s gotta have an egg of some sort Has to be bookended between bready carbs You have to be able to pick it up With that being said, I will not be counting breakfast burgers on this list due to burgers deserving a column to themselves down the road. Breakfast sandwiches are eaten all over the world from the famous bodegas of New York serving bacon, egg and cheese, to Parisian cafes serving up Croque Madame in France. Anyways let’s get cracking and talk about some breakfast sandwiches. Rosewood Breakfast Sandwich: Bacon, Eggs and Cheese 1. Rosewood Foods - 10150 100 St NW #101, Edmonton, AB It goes without saying that Rosewood is an ICYT favourite. I’m sure the bossman and @ianternetmaster can attest to our admiration of Rosewood Foods. These guys don’t miss – I haven’t had a thing on the menu or out of their baked good case that I haven’t enjoyed every last bite of. I often have a hankering for their bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. Their house made milk bread is golden brown, perfectly toasted, and pillow-y soft. They don’t skimp on the Pembina bacon that’s double smoked and thick cut. Of course it has a fried egg, with a jammy yolk, blanketed with a melted slice of cheddar cheese. Lastly, the sweet/spicy chili jam is the perfect condiment to tie everything together. The sandwich’s ultimate side kick is the beloved and extremely addicting, crispy smashed potatoes that are piled high with every order. Don’t forget to take a peek at their baked goods case, stocked daily with a plethora of delicious treats to choose from. Do go early if you don’t want to miss out. The baked goods move with quickness and will be gone before you know it. Rosewood Foods has a little bit of something for everybody – their curated wine is always chilling on deck and their Habanero Honey is another must have for any kitchen (it’s so good I bet it’d even make cardboard taste good, I personally like it drizzled over pizza and fried chicken). Brown Butter Café Good Morning Bun-wich 2. Brown Butter Café - 1528 91 St SW, Edmonton, AB We’re going back to back *Siri play Back to Back by Drake * on milk bread breakfast sandwiches. This café is tucked away off Ellerslie Road and 91st street. Milk buns are the name of the game at Brown Butter Café and they do not play around. Their Good Morning Bun-wich might be my favourite breakfast sandwich in the city, I could probably eat 50 of them easily if I was caught on a day with no self-control. The Good Morning Bun-wich is served on their house made milk bun - I have no other way of describing it other than it’s a perfect fluffy cloud of soft sweet bread. It’s packed with a variety of flavours and textures - inside lays a perfectly cooked double soft scrambled egg, a melty slice of cheddar cheese, wonderfully ripe sliced avocado, sweet pickled red onions, crispy bacon (not included, but definitely worth adding) and a smear of spicy mayo. If you haven’t had this breakfast sandwich before, it will blow you away. Also, keep your eyes peeled as every week they have a specialty milk bun feature with different sweet and savoury flavours available for pre-order. Flavours they’ve had in the past include Lemon Meringue, Curry Puff, and Blueberry Lemon. Lockstock Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich 3. Lock Stock Coffee - 10534 Jasper Ave, Edmonton, AB Headed back downtown to another tried and true breakfast sandwich spot in the heart of Edmonton. Lock Stock Coffee is the perfect spot to grab a coffee and breakfast sandwich whenever you’re on Jasper Ave. It’s a great spot to grab some breakfast, get some work done or catch up with some friends (when it’s safe to do so of course). If you’re lucky enough to find yourself around Lock Stock on a Saturday, you’ll be graced with the presence of their biscuit breakfast sandwich. Yeah breakfast sandwiches are cool and all on an English muffin, but on a homemade herb and cheddar biscuit?!?!? Say no more. The warm, flaky, buttery goodness is just the thing to level up your breakfast sandwich. I usually stick with the classic: double smoked Pembina bacon, arugula, tomato jam, lemon Dijon aioli, on a herb and cheddar biscuit, plus I freak it a little bit by adding an egg – because hey why not it’s my breakfast sandwich! Grab a coffee or tea while you’re there and don’t forget to look at the baked goods in the case while you’re up at the front ordering. If they have it, the Kouign-Amann and Pear and Ricotta scone are an instant pick up to snack on for later. Honourable Mentions As always if I missed your favourite spot in Meal Check, please see below for some honourable mentions of other breakfast sandwiches that will be sure to start your day off on the right foot. Don’t think much more needs to be said about this one. I know the comment section would be popping off it wasn’t on here – no need to sound off, save your keystrokes.
