ISLAND TEENS ADVOCAC Y TEAM ITAT NEWSLETTER September 2019 ITAT Leadership Training This month, our ITAT presidencies attended a leadership training on Saturday, September 28th 2019. The theme of the training was "Using our stories to empower and educate our peers and communities". We unveiled our new presentation "Lengthen your breath of life". ITAT students learned statistics on tobacco use in the Pacific Island Community and how tobacco impacts their peers. It also included new information on the Vaping epidemic plaguing teens all over the world. Our Island Teens practiced their leadership skills by telling their own stories, and sharing why they choose to be tobacco/vape free. Each student drew their Lifeline on a large poster and shared with the other students importa nt experiences that helped shape them into the person they are today. After sharing their personal stories, the students all created videos for social media stating their reasons for staying tobacco/vape free. The leadership training empowered our ITAT students to be leaders in their communities and among their peers. Our ITAT presidencies left the training ready and excited to share, educate, and advocate to their peers. Following the training, the students went roller skating at Classic Skate. Tobacco Facts: -E-cigarettes can be bought at almost any gas station/convenience store -7.6% of Utah teens use e-cigarettes regularly -In Lehi and Cedar Hills the age requirement to purchase E-cigarettes is 21 but it is only 19 everywhere else in Utah until 2021 E-cigarettes are equally as harmful as normal cigarettes Tobacco kills over 480,000 people in the U.S. and over 7 million worldwide each year. there are 300 new smokers in the US daily 20.8% of high schoolers in the US use e-cigarettes 25.5% of youth in hawaii use e-cigarettes -5.6 million kids alive today in the U.S. will ultimately die from smoking In the U.S. alone, tobacco companies spend $9.1 billion a year — $1 million every hour — to market their deadly products.
