SUPPORT THE PTO & GET YOUR DIRECTORY!

The 2020-2021 directory orders are getting ready to print! Help support the PV-PTO by making a donation of $100 or more today (which will include your directory). Your financial support is a critical way to ensure that the programs that make our schools (and the PVSD community) so special continue year after year.

The cut-off for directory orders is Wednesday, September 16th!

*We prefer directory orders be made and purchased online this year if possible. If necessary to pay by cash or check, there is a cash/check option on Cheddar Up. Please select that option and follow the instructions for mailing your check to the school office.

NOW ACCEPTING COVER ART FOR THE PV SCHOOLS DIRECTORY

The Portola Valley Schools Student Directory is perhaps the highest-circulation publication of local origin, and its release each fall is surrounded with considerable excitement and glamour. It's an invaluable local resource, highlighting the generosity and diversity of local businesses, providing essential information on our schools, and enabling the social lives of our children.

We like to feature the work of an up-and-coming local artist on the cover. We are inviting Ormondale and Corte Madera Students, from rising kindergartners through emerging eighth graders, to send in their cover designs. We'll choose one to be this year's cover. The winner's family will receive a complimentary copy of the directory, suitable for autographing.

The cover format is standard letter size, 8.5" x 11", portrait orientation, in color.

Please send entries to [email protected] by Friday, September 11th.

Please include the artist's name, grade level for the upcoming school year, and parent's name.

SUBMIT YOUR CHILD'S PICTURE

Please submit a photo of your child to your Home Room Parent ASAP.  These photos will be arranged into a placemat for your child to have at home. They can have it in their workspace to help to familiarize them with their classmates.

The goal is to have these printed and sent home in the next material pick up. A BIG thank you for those that have already submitted.

SUPERFOODS

The second grade Superfood for August is Cucumbers.  You may want to try Ms. Hovland's favorite gazpacho recipe.

Gazpacho

  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 5 Roma tomatoes
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 1 large cucumber
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • Hot sauce to your taste
  • Salt to your taste
  • Black pepper to your taste
  • 4 cups tomato juice

1.  Mince the garlic and dice the tomatoes, cucumber, zucchini and celery.  Put the minced garlic and half the diced vegetables and the olive oil in the bowl of a food processor or a blender.

2.  Splash in the vinegar and add the sugar, hot sauce, salt and pepper.  Pour in 2 cups of tomato juice and blend well.  You will basically have a tomato base with a confetti of vegetables.

3.  Pour the blended mixture into a large bowl and add the other half of the diced vegetables.  Stir together and then add the remaining 2 cups of tomato juice.  Give it a taste to make sure the seasoning is right. Adjust as needed.   Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

You can top the gazpacho with grilled shrimp, hard boiled eggs, avocado or cucumber slices. Serve with delicious sourdough bread and "sassy water".

Sassy water - Fill a container with water, ice, sliced cucumber, lemon and minced ginger. Refreshing - Just like being at a spa!

JUST BREATHE: Peaceful Parents, Happy Kids

Thurs Sept 17, 4:00-5:15pm

Select the “Member School*” option and register at no cost here: https://lu.ma/CommonGroundSpeakerSerieswithLauraMarkham

Does the added stress of being at home bring added battles with your child? Do you wish you knew how to get cooperation without yelling and threats? Are you trying to find the sweet spot between spoiling and strict? No one is prepared to parent through a pandemic. As school starts, and we are all still at home, fostering cooperation and learning independence are more important than ever. Clinical psychologist Dr. Laura Markham helps parents shift away from control and manipulation to practical strategies for raising children who WANT to cooperate. She helps parents create a more peaceful home where affection, connection and humor help resolve conflict happily, and where kids WANT to follow our lead.

*This year, the PTO has paid for PVSD membership in the Common Ground Speaker Series, which presents distinguished speakers in education, parenting and health at venues across the San Francisco Peninsula. Their 2020-2021 Series will take place live online. Parents, faculty, and staff of member schools attend Common Ground events free of charge. To view the Common Ground Fall 2020 Slate click here
