Chamber Network Budget Dialogue Calls on Govt to Deliver on Infrastructure

Picture

26 September 2018

Chambers of Commerce from around the country gathered in Dublin today for the first Chamber Network Budget Dialogue, facilitating engagement between Chambers and their representative TDs on the forthcoming Budget.

Budget 2019 is the first following the finalisation of Project Ireland 2040 and it is crucial that investments announced in the National Development Plan are delivered upon. This is also the last Budget before the UK leaves the European Union and therefore our last opportunity to ensure that there is adequate finance to support business through the volatile periods to come. Today we met with TDs from across the political spectrum and all parts of the country to advocate for the need for this investment and for ongoing support for SMEs in {insert county/region here] ahead of Brexit. This means retaining 9% VAT and ensuring there is adequate funds and supports for business ahead of Brexit.”

Speaking at the event, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive Ian Talbot said,

“Although the country is in a strong position, we cannot afford to be complacent.Budget 2019 is an opportunity to prepare for any difficulties ahead. Through investment and careful planning, Government can ensure that our economic prosperity is sustainable and that we are prepared to weather all threats on the horizon.”

Department of Business, Enterprise & Innovation – Brexit Preparedness Notices

Efforts are currently underway to reach an agreement to ensure the withdrawal of the UK from the EU occurs with minimum disruption and to put in place a framework for a future relationship which will enable the closest possible EU-UK relationship post Brexit.

However, the UK’s notification of its intention to withdraw from the EU has created significant uncertainties. The European Commission has therefore sought to clarify what the situation will be for a number of business sectors in the event that no agreement is reached to mitigate the impacts of the UK’s withdrawal.

Notices have been issued in respect of industrial products, company law, trademarks, auditing and import and export licenses as well as a range of other areas. A list of the notices published to date are available to view on the Commission’s website at the following link:

European Commission Brexit Preparedness

The Department of Business, Enterprise & Innovation (DBEI) is encouraging firms to review these notices and consider relevant actions that may be required to mitigate any potential negative impacts that may arise for them in terms of Brexit.

If you have any queries regarding these Brexit Preparedness Notices or the industrial sector which your business operates in, with regards to preparing for Brexit, please contact our EU & International Affairs Manager Emma Kerins, via her email address: [email protected]
