ZERO WASTE HAASTOBER WEEK FOUR

Zero Waste and Environmental Justice

Welcome to the fourth and final week of Zero Waste Haastober.

We've come a long way! Over the course of this month, we've explored our current means of production and consumption; learned the power of reducing, reusing, and refusing; and reimagined our economy as circular.

For our fourth and final week of Zero Waste Haastober, we'll be learning about how the Zero Waste movement can and must serve environmental justice -- the right of all people to live, work, and play in clean and healthy environments. It is my deepest hope that this week's content situates ourselves as of and within nature and explains why environmental advocacy is one with social, racial, and economic justice.

Remember, you have until November 7 to submit your actions to earn points, and winners will be receiving a prize package from EthiCAL Apparel. Check out our website here for complete details about our past actions to learn more.

Signing off for people and the planet,

MONDAY, OCTOBER 26: VAN JONES' ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Picture

In this TEDx Talk, news commentator and "Green for All" founder Van Jones discusses how plastic production, use, and disposal disproportionately impacts the poor and communities of color. This conversation can be understand as a contribution to environmental justice, a social movement concerned with the distribution of environmental benefits and burdens among different communities.

To log this challenge, briefly explain what Jones means when he says, "We are at a moment where the coming together of social justice as an idea and ecology as an idea, we can finally now see that they are really, at the end of the day, one idea. It's the idea that we don't have disposable anything: we don't have disposable resources, we don't have disposable species, and we don't have disposable people, either." (Hint: How might biomimicry and social justice lead to a new kind of society?)
