This week's 10 Questions interview is with Michelle and Kevin Calloway of SPACE 42, a former industrial warehouse that now serves the community as a place where art, technology, and creative entrepreneurship converge. On Thursday, May 3, Space 42 will host an opening reception for Colombian born artist Luisa Posada Bleier's solo exhibition, which is the artist's first solo show in the United States. Join them starting at 7:00 PM to learn more about the venue and artist.

Visit the Art Center Cooperative on Monday, April 30 at 11:00 AM to view "Canucwhatic" (Can-U-C-What-I-C), an exhibition of works by Marsha Hatcher​ inspired by Rorschach's ink blots.  The TAC gallery, located at 2 W Independent Dr inside the Landing, will be open until 5:00 PM. The exhibit runs through May 14.

VSA Festival

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens​ is home to the Jacksonville affiliate of VSA, an international organization that provides opportunities in the arts for individuals with disabilities. The annual VSA Festival invites Jacksonville-area students with

disabilities to visit the Cummer Museum for a chance to experience art through all of their senses. Over the course of four days, nearly 1,800 children, 700 teachers and chaperones, and 1,300 volunteers fill the Museum to engage in art viewing in the galleries, movement, music in the gardens, and art-making activities throughout the entire Museum. The event allows each student to participate in the creative process and to demonstrate their own artistic abilities. VSA Festival 2018 starts on Tuesday, May 1 and concludes on Friday, May 4.

Each Spring, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor a nation-wide high school arts competition. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.  The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talents across the Nation.

On Wednesday, May 2, 2018, during Downtown Jacksonville Art Walk, Congressman John Rutherford, Congressman Al Lawson, and the Cultural Council are hosting a reception for the public to view students’ artworks and celebrate their talents.  Pieces from Districts 4 and 5 will be displayed and jurors, Aaron Levi Garvey (Curator and co-founder of Long Road Projects); Madeleine Peck Wagner (Jacksonville based artist and A&E Editor of Folio Weekly); JaMario Stills (Founder of Phase Eight Theater Company and Board Member of the Cultural Council); Dustin Harewood (Jacksonville based artist and art educator at Florida State College of Jacksonville); and Lynn Lewis (Gallery Coordinator at Florida State College of Jacksonville​), will select winning pieces from both districts, which the Congressmen will then announce to the public. The event will take place at the Police and Fire Pension Fund Building (1 W Adams St) starting at 5:00 PM. Awards will be announced starting at 7:00 PM. 

Play Play

Artist Tracie Thornton invites you to an opening reception of her solo show "Play Play" on Friday, May 4 at the Karpeles Manuscript Library. Through interactive sculpture and performance, Thornton explores different perspectives of how youthful dalliances can change and morph over time.  The event starts at 5:00 PM and concludes at 8:00 PM.  The Karpeles is located at 101 W 1st St in Springfield.

42nd Annual Arts Awards

Join us on Saturday, May 5 at TIAA Bank Field to celebrate Northeast Florida's arts and cultural sector at the 42nd Annual Arts Awards. The 2018 honorees include: Emily Lisska, Shawana Brooks, Color Me Kona, Malcolm Jackson, Tim Gilmore, Philip Pan, Tony Rodrigues, and Heather Moore. 

American poet, playwright, performer, journalist, and radio and podcast host, Al Letson, will serve as the evening's Master of Ceremonies.  This year's interactive art installation was designed by the Castaño Group.  The evening will include performances by The Chris Thomas Band and the after-party will be programmed by Willie Evans Jr. and GeeXella

The after-after party will be hosted at The Justice Pub, downtown's newest night spot located at 315 E Bay St. Additional information will be announced during the event.
