SBS Presents -

Kilborn Alley Blues Band @ Hideaway Café!

Picture

Here are a couple of things to think about, if you are really determined to sit and think about the Kilborn Alley Blues Band. Andy listened to a lot of rap and reggae as a kid, but when he started the guitar he went straight to Johnson, Elmore James and Hooker, with Hendrix as a constant goad. He committed the band to the inspiration of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Josh met Andy in a conversation about a Hendrix t-shirt in high school. At that age Josh loved metal and has played open-fingered style. Today he has tremendous admiration for Hubert Sumlin and has worked to bring some of those licks to the band. He studied the rhythm guitar parts in soul and leads the band when they go into those territories. As a harp player, Joe pushed the inspiration of James Cotton through the two Sonny Boys and two Walters. Little Walter has been a major influence on Kilborn Alley.  Chris’ family has a long interest in "old timey" music, and has Chris playing around with the stand-up bass. Ed has the longest and most complicated pedigree in the band. He has been in rock bands, blues bands, and some very fine country bands. With Kilborn Alley, he has been compared to the young Sam Lay at his best. Ed plays a minimal kit, and that stands for the whole Kilborn Alley approach to equipment.

Damon Fowler & Greg Poulos Acoustic!

      Picture

Damon Fowler was born and raised in Brandon, Florida, and first picked up a guitar at the age of 12. After being shown a few chords he quickly developed an affinity for the instrument…and also fell in love with the blues.  He was soon gigging regularly in small clubs in the Tampa Bay Area. After adding hints of R&B, soul, and country to his approach, Fowler learned to play lap steel guitar and Dobro and also added a wicked slide guitar style to his arsenal, and developed a versatile singing voice along the way, too.

Greg Poulos has had a long and eventful history, starting in his early teens. Of greatest interest to blues fans is probably the year he spent touring with the legendary Freddie King.  In the early winter of 1976, Greg was broke, hardly working, and living in an unheated garage. He heard that King was auditioning for a new rhythm guitarist. Freddie took one look at Greg’s near-homeless hippie attire and shook his head. That would never do.  He wasn’t even going to give Greg a listen until he learned that Greg had recently sat in with Sammy Lawhorn in Chicago. Greg finally got to take the stage and played like his life depended on it, with his friends whooping and hollering. Afterwards, Freddie invited Greg to a poker game (a very good sign!). Greg got the gig, and a few days later he was onstage playing alongside the legendary Freddie King.
