STAYING HEALTHY EVERY DAY

Can you believe that August is already here? With Cabarrus County schools starting early this year, I felt it was a good time to draw attention to some wonderful items we have that will help keep you and/or your kids healthy and environmentally conscience, not only this school year but every day that we are privileged to be on the planet.

Healthy Snacks + Lunches

As a teacher it was a daily strain for me to see the unhealthy meal and snack choices that students and parents were making. A diet full of food that lacks vital nutrients not only affects your physical health, but your mental as well. For the start of this school year, and for your daily snack choices, load up on a variety of healthy OPTIONS: Pamela's Fig Jammies (Golden, CA) are made with all natural ingredients - competitors' products are filled with bioengineered food ingredients; Lundberg Stackers (Richvale, CA) are an Organic alternative to traditional rice cakes and are made with minimal ingredients; 88 Acres' oat bars (Canton, MA) are allergen-free, delicious, and wholesome; and Think Jerky's 100% grass-fed jerky (Chicago, IL) is a great source of protein.

You can never go wrong with fruit and veggies, and boy do we have those in abundance throughout the year. Right now we have a variety of sweet melons, stone fruits, berries, citrus, carrots, cucumbers (and hummus to go with them). Olde Salt Mercantile's sandwich bread is to die for and makes the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich. For those with peanut allergies, we carry Coddle Creek's (Mooresville, NC) sunflower, cashew, and almond butters.

Elderberry Syrup + Gummies

Elderberries are packed with immune boosting nutrients. We have Sweet's Elderberry Syrup (Charlotte, NC), and a variety of Elderberry Gummies from Norms Farms (Pittsboro, NC). Many people rely on the health benefits of elderberries during the school year, but it is good practice to take your supplements year-round. We take ours every day as a daily "vitamin".

Responsible Food Packaging + Utensils

In this day and age it is so simple to use plastic alternatives, and it is more affordable. How much do you spend on plastic bags and wrap? Make a one-time purchase that will last for years. We have a great selection of all natural and sustainable Bee's Wrap (Middlebury, VT) that will make packing lunches and snacks easier: snack bags, sandwich bags, and food wrap. We also have insulated zipper craft bags and reusable bamboo utensil sets. It's always a good time to make a better choice for the planet our children will live in.

Books

Many of you know that I used to be a Language Arts teacher and Frank was a Science teacher. Did you know that we now carry affordable books in a wide-variety of genres? Most of our used books range from $1-$4 each. Bring your kids - or yourself - on over and browse through our selection while enjoying the nostalgic feel of the quaint cabin across from the main store.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils are a great source of natural healing, health, and focus. Dreaming Earth Botanicals (Asheville, NC) is a family owned company that provides all natural essential oils that are undiluted and pure. We have a variety of essential oils that can be used topically and in diffusers to help with... focus and clarity for study sessions and tough work days (lemon, rosemary, lavender, orange, peppermint + more); staying healthy (Germ Buster, Be Well, Eucalyptus Radiata, Anti-Bac + more), and getting needed rest (lavender, Sleep Well, Breath Easy, Head Ease + more). Check out our full line available in the cabin.

Fact of the Week:  "The plastic typically used in bottles, bags and food containers contains chemical additives such as endocrine disruptors, which are associated with negative health effects including cancers, birth defects and immune system suppression in humans and wildlife" (biologicaldiversity.org). And plastic baggies are what many people choose to store their snacks, lunches, leftovers, etc.
