Allegro Announces Online Classes with Beverly Spell, the Creator of Leap 'N Learn

Picture
Dr. Annie Spell, Miss Allie, Miss Janet, and Miss Beverly at the LNL workshop in Dallas, TX, July 2018.

Allegro owner Janet Johnson knew she'd come across someone special when she first met Beverly Spell in 2012. Miss Beverly's Leap ‘N Learn curriculum aligned with the artistic and educational values that Allegro has always embraced. Janet knew that an affiliation with Leap ‘N Learn would provide great value to Allegro students and families. Since joining the program in 2013, Allegro teachers have attended training sessions at Miss Beverly’s ballet school in Louisiana. Five years later, in December 2018, we had the extraordinary opportunity to host Miss Beverly for a week at Allegro. She provided continuing education for our teachers and spent time in the studios with our dancers. We are very grateful for the positive personal connection she made with our dancers, their families and the Allegro faculty and staff.

In this time of online learning, we are very excited to incorporate Miss Beverly’s materials into our Creative, Pre Ballet and Beginning Ballet classes. Students in these classes will have the opportunity to take classes online with Miss Beverly.

To learn more about the whole child Leap ‘N Learn curriculum, visit their website at https://www.leapnlearn.com/for-parents. Allegro is proud to be the only Leap ‘N Learn affiliated studio in SE MN.

Rising to the Challenge

Allegro has moved to online classes.

The restrictions on group gatherings led to some very creative solutions here at Allegro. In the space of a week we embraced new technology and platforms in our quest to stay connected with our students and their families. We know that regular routines and familiar faces are the key to maintaining good mental health and positive connections in uncertain times. Now, more than ever, we need the arts to lift our spirits, to move our bodies, to calm our souls. Please check out all the resources we have provided on Our Covid-19 Response section of our website. Not only do we have our regular classes, we also have free activities, story time, free fitness classes, Wiggle Wednesday, health information, local resources for food and childcare, and links to official government resources. We are all in this together. Stay home, stay safe and be well.

Meet Allegro's Student of the Month, Alex W!

Picture

Eleven-year-old Alex is a dedicated, motivated young dancer who is extremely meticulous in his work and committed to developing his artistry and expression. Alex worked tirelessly all season preparing for the Youth American Grand Prix international ballet competition and it paid off. Alex placed third in Classical Solo and second in Contemporary Solo at the regional event in Chicago on February 8. He also participated in master classes with instructors from major ballet schools and companies from across the US. Through this event, he received not only his invitation to compete at the finals with dancers from all across the world, but also multiple summer intensive scholarship opportunities. Alex was working toward competing in the YAGP finals in Westchester, New York on April 10 when the competition was cancelled as a result of Covid-19.

Congratulations, Alex! You shine brightly every time you are on stage and your love for performing is evident. We are all very proud of you!

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is the world’s largest global network of dance, connecting students, teachers, schools, dance companies, dancers, and audiences. Their mission is to support and develop world-class dancers, ages 9-19, of all economic, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds by providing scholarship auditions, performance and education opportunities.

Allegro is very proud of Alex and all their students who participated in the Youth American Grand Prix program. To learn more about this organization, visit the YAGP website. Senior Spotlight: Eleanor F.

Picture

Eleanor has been dancing at Allegro for 14 years. During that time her favorite production role was playing the Star Fairy in The Polar Express. A lot of memories can be made over the course of 14 years and Eleanor mentioned several that stood out. One of her favorites dates back to the days of performance company lock-ins. The dancers would stay up all night performing their competition dances in their pajamas, watching movies and playing games. She also highlighted a growth experience in Allegro's pre-professional program; the dancers were given studio time and broad creative freedom to choreograph a small dance piece of their very own. Sharing those pieces with the rest of class was a great confidence builder. Eleanor credits her experience at Allegro for growing as a well-rounded dancer. She knows she can rely on the relationships she's developed with her teachers and peers for guidance in dance as well as other areas of her life.

Eleanor's future plans include attending the University of Iowa with a double major in dance and elementary education. As she explained, “I love to work with kids! I’m super excited to teach and positively impact student’s lives.”

Congratulations, Eleanor! We know that you will continue to shine brightly as a dancer and a teacher!
