Fall Update

Picture

During this Thanksgiving week, we want to express how thankful we are for our new and returning volunteer tutors.

We know it's not always easy to commit to a regular classroom visit with everything going on in our lives.  But we hope you feel, as we do, a real sense of fulfillment when you touch the lives of the deserving students.  Our days are lighter and more joyous after an hour of tutoring, and we hope you feel the same way.

Volunteer Stories

Do you have a heart-warming story that you'd like to share of a moment when you felt you really made a difference or brightened the day of a student?  Let us know by clicking here to access our feedback form.  We'd love to hear your story!

Tutors Still Needed at McKinley and Kennedy

Picture

Tutoring is well underway now at Kennedy School, McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT), and Fair Oaks School.

But we still have a few teachers that could really use our help during specific time slots.  If you have been thinking about volunteering, or if you think you could volunteer another hour during the week, now would be a great time to start.

If you're interested, please fill out the volunteer form here.  Then we'll get you on your way including providing you with a training document and all the supplies you'll need to be successful.

Once a Year Appeal

Picture

Los Ayudantes’ mission is to promote literacy for life by establishing caring connections with underserved Redwood City School District students and helping them to build literacy and critical thinking skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. We are the only literacy-focused non-profit on the Peninsula that places volunteers in the classroom at the middle school level.

Help us expand our volunteer base to serve more deserving kids and teachers during this holiday season by spreading the word about Los Ayudantes to your friends you think might be interested in being a volunteer in 2019 as well.

In mid December, we'll be sending our Annual Appeal - just once a year ask.  We hope you consider Los Ayudantes in your annual giving plan - even just $50 or $100 goes a long way to helping support our mission.

Literacy Article

This Edutopia blog post made us laugh - comparing middle schoolers to squirrels.  But it goes a lot to addressing our mission in the classroom including the importance of creating personal relationships with the kids to help them learn.  The article also explains that it helps to have a plan for distraction too when things get out of control.
