Pathways Rhythms May 2024 Pathways News It is with deep appreciation and sadness that I share the news of Julie Stegelmann's resignation from her Prayer Coordinator role at Pathways, effective May 24. Given her son's recent ALS diagnosis, she is laying down a call she's loved to follow an even deeper call of love and presence with her family. Julie's history as a co-founder combined with her prayerful presence and aesthetic sensibilities, makes her irreplaceable. I, along with others, deeply grieve her leaving. Pathways will, however, continue to be a contemplative retreat center grounded in prayer as others pick up what Julie is laying down. There was a time in our 21-years of ministry together where Julie and I close our written correspondence with, "Grace and Peace." For us, these two attributes summed up the distinctives of our Lutheran and Mennonite traditions. As Julie follows this deeper call that has unexpectedly come into her life, may God strengthen her heart by grace and guide her feet into the way of peace. Linda Lehman Thomas, Director Prayers at Pathways Stations of the Resurrection will be available until May19, both in the woods at Pathways and virtually on our website. Saturday, June 15 Practice at Pathways The Tree of Hope is a place of prayer, rooted in the Celtic Christian tradition. For many centuries in Scotland and Ireland, pilgrims visited sacred wells and tied strips of cloth on a tree adjacent to the well. Often, these cloth rags represented physical ailments from which the pilgrim was seeking healing. These trees were called “Clootie Trees” because in Scots a Cloot is a rag or a strip of cloth. As the strips weathered and blew away, so too the pilgrims prayed that their sickness would fade and go away. We invite you to offer your prayers by tying a rag strip to our metal Tree of Hope sculpture. This might be to honor a loss, or to pray for healing for yourself or a loved one. You might want to offer a prayer for a situation in your life, or in the world. Do you have cotton fabric sitting at home, unused? We invite you to donate your extra fabric to Pathways for the Tree of Hope. Contact a staff person or just drop your fabric off at the Retreat House. Because the fabric remains on the sculpture until it naturally degrades and blows away, we only use natural fibers, such as cotton.
