Do you believe in the power of early childhood education? Do you think it lays a foundation for future curiosity and a love of learning? Do you think that families are integral to this foundation? Do you think it should be accessible for all? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please explore the pages of our March Newsletter to learn more about what is happening at Escuela Cooperativa de Sayulita.
Escuela currently serves 26 children from the community with 14 graduating in June. We provide the only tuition-free preschool in Sayulita and have had so many inquiries that we are building an additional classroom in August. This is exciting news as it allows us to double our enrollment. We already have over 30 children registered for the fall.
Thanks to your support, we continue to make improvements to Escuela. We recently added an outside sink, so the children can wash the dishes themselves after lunch. We also increased the size of the garden and added new vegetables and herbs. The children water every day and made traditional crepe paper flowers to decorate the fence that protects it from the local iguanas. (We told them it was a "secret" garden to keep the iguanas away!)
In February, we partnered with SayulitaAnimals to bring a puppy to Escuela. They talked to the children about how to care for animals and not be afraid of them. (The local newspaper highlighted this activity.) We continue our partnership with Mujeres Movimiento as the after-school English program for 6-11 year olds grows. They recently visited the plaza to practice their skills by surveying tourists on their favorite type of pizza.
