DBSA National & Local Alternative Support Groups for Youth and Loved Ones

We note with great sadness the passing this week of Eric Scharf, our chapter's long time member, facilitator, and leader, from oral cancer. His brothers, friends, and chaplain were with him, and he died peacefully, according the National DBSA CEO Michael Pollock.
Eric took a leadership role in all aspects of chapter organization and communication. He arranged many of our prime educational, cultural, and social programs. When COVID hit, he led the way in utilizing Zoom for the continuation of support groups, and developed and updated the slide deck used to begin the virtual groups. He created and led the daytime virtual group on Wednesdays at noon. He sought to extend the chapter's role in the city and reach out to the underserved. No one worked harder for the chapter than Eric. He was a true pillar of our community.
Eric long worked part time for National DBSA in advocacy and outreach to the DC government and its Department of Behavioral Health, which he knew well.
Eric is featured in DBSA’s directory here: Eric Scharf - Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance
Eric served on the board of the Capital Clubhouse, seeking to help the lives of those affected by mental illness. Eric noted both DBSA and the Capital Clubhouse as organizations he would like to see others support. Individuals may wish to make contributions in his memory. The Clubhouse website, with information on making memorial contributions, is: Capital Clubhouse Inc
According to the Parish website (stthomasdc.org), the funeral service will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1517 18th Street, NW, in DC on Saturday September 30 at 2:30 PM. There will also be a virtual option:

Eric’s wishes were that we contribute in his memorial by donating to DBSA NCA or Capital Clubhouse, both organizations fostering mental health with which he worked closely, and whose missions he passionately believed in. Donation links here:

In the notes section of DBSA NCA’s donation link, you may note the contribution is in memorial of Eric (and please note if you would like your name released to DBSA leadership if you do not wish to remain anonymous); in the Capital Clubhouse donation link, you may indicate your dedication of memorial in the bottom of the form.

Please let us know if you have any other memories you would like to share.
