September is generally a month of returning to a routine.  Vacationers return home, students return to school, “winter Texans” return to the Hill Country, and organizations resume their regular meetings.  But sometimes the return to a routine is disrupted by unforeseen events.

Such is the case with Star Republican Women.  Due to the parking lot renovation at Quail Point and the SRW Board’s decision to support the Llano County Republican Party Constitution Day Celebration Fundraiser on September 17th, Star did not have its regular meeting that day.

I am pleased to report that the LCRP Fundraiser event completely sold out and was a huge success. Thanks to all SRW members who participated in this event.  What an amazing response for the first Constitution Day Celebration where Llano County Republicans joined forces to raise money to ensure that we “Keep Texas Red!”

Be sure that you don’t miss out on the Star Republican Women Octoberfest event October 10th.  Please buy your tickets today and join us for what should be a very fun event.

Due to the uncertainty on the availability of Quail Point In October, we will NOT have our regular second Tuesday meeting, so we will have a brief business meeting at our Octoberfest event.

One more opportunity….There’s still time to register for the TFRW Convention in Galveston October 3-5.  We have already submitted the credentialing form for delegates, but it can be amended if anyone would like to go to the Convention as a delegate.  Please email me ASAP if you are interested at [email protected].

Hope to see you soon!

Red Shoe Book Club

To Meet October 22

Picture

Star Republican Women's Red Shoe Book Club will meet Tuesday, October 22 to discuss the book "The Lost Girls of Paris" by Pam Jenoff.  SRW Literacy Committee Chairman Kathy Hussey will host the event at the Horseshoe Bay Resort Lantana Room from 4 to 6 p.m.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A remarkable story of friendship and courage centered around three women and a ring of female secret agents during World War II.

1946, Manhattan
One morning while passing through Grand Central Terminal on her way to work, Grace Healey finds an abandoned suitcase tucked beneath a bench.

Unable to resist her own curiosity, Grace opens the suitcase, where she discovers a dozen photographs—each of a different woman. In a moment of impulse, Grace takes the photographs and quickly leaves the station.

Grace soon learns that the suitcase belonged to a woman named Eleanor Trigg, leader of a network of female secret agents who were deployed out of London during the war. Twelve of these women were sent to Occupied Europe as couriers and radio operators to aid the resistance.

But they never returned home, their fates a mystery.

Setting out to learn the truth behind the women in the photographs, Grace finds herself drawn to a young mother turned agent named Marie, whose daring mission overseas reveals a remarkable story of friendship, valor and betrayal.

Vividly rendered and inspired by true events, New York Times bestselling author Pam Jenoff shines a light on the incredible heroics of the brave women of the war and weaves a mesmerizing tale of courage, sisterhood and the great strength of women to survive in the hardest of circumstances. (From the publisher.)

Even if you haven't read the book, you can attend and enjoy the conversation about the book and other topics of interest to the group.  Food and beverage service will be available on an individual pay as you go basis.

86th Texas Legislature Update

Picture

Following is a special report from State Rep. Andrew Murr:

This upcoming November, you will have the opportunity to vote on 10 proposed constitutional   amendments passed during the 86th Legislative Session.  One of these proposed constitutional amendments is Proposition 4 which would constitutionally prohibit a state income tax in Texas.

History: In 1993, voters approved a Constitutional Amendment that prohibited a personal income tax without first obtaining voter approval in a statewide referendum. Currently, the Texas Constitution requires only a simple majority vote of the legislature to send the issue to voters. If passed, Proposition 4 would increase protections against a future income tax by requiring a TWO-THIRDS super-majority in both legislative chambers before a question of an income tax was put before voters in a statewide referendum. In short, if approved Proposition 4 would make a future income tax on individuals in Texas nearly impossible.

What will be on the ballot: Proposition 4 (HJR 38)
“The constitutional amendment prohibiting the imposition of an individual income tax, including a tax on an individual’s share of partnership and unincorporated association income.”

Against

Murr represents House District 53 that includes Llano County and 11 other counties.
