SOUTHBRIDGE PREPS for POWER-WASHING and TREE-TRIMMING

Picture

Green and Clean Property Solutions will be at Southbridge, Monday, April 27-Wednesday, April 28, to power-wash the community entrance, the pool area and condo doorways and sidewalks.

The order of areas to be serviced depends on various weather factors; residents should clear all plants, rugs and furniture from their doorways by Sunday night, April 26. If your area is not clear, the workmen will  assume that you do not want the entrance power-washed and will move to the next unit; you have only one opportunity.

Green and Clean will wash the monuments, ballister and bridge at the entrance, and the safety fence and planters at the pool.

In preparation for hurricane season, Ryan Tree Service will start trimming trees throughout Southbridge on Monday, April 27. Be aware that when trees are trimmed, rodents are disturbed and begin looking for new nest areas. Keep your garage doors closed at all times, so that rodents do not choose your condo as comfortable new home.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE CONDUCTS ONLINE SURVEY

Picture

The Southbridge Social Committee consists of community members who plan and implement social events that foster opportunities for residents to get together, have fun and build new friendships.

The social committee does not receive money allocated by the Southbridge budget. In the past, the committee requested a $5 per person donation; this year the committee raffled gift baskets to raise funds and collected donations at the Welcome Back Brunch. The money was used for special event and Tuesday night social supplies, decorations, publicity fliers, and supplementing food and beverage costs.

The 2019-2020 season has been one of experimenting with new ideas, and the committee is eager to get your input in order to develop even better activities for next year. Let the committee know what you liked or did not like by filling out the online survey; comment on food, fund raising, music, decor, time, cost, inclusivity, ease of sign up and advance publicity.

The survey is open to residents only; you must log in to participate. The survey will be closed May 29, 2020.

The committee welcomes new members (men as well as women!) Please let one of the current social committee members know if you are interested in joining the group.

SOUTHBRIDGE SOCIAL DISTANCING MEANS  BYOE SOCIAL EVENTS

Picture

What is BYOE? Bring Your Own Everything!

Southbridge neighbors are holding informal, impromptu gatherings in the evenings by the creek or along the shores of the ponds. Residents bring their own chairs, beverages, and snacks - even cocktail tables -  sit the requisite six-feet from each other, and chat ... albeit in somewhat louder voices than usual to carry across the conversational divide!

Once a group reaches ten people, residents split into another group to stay within the social distancing guidelines (and to hear each other better!)

The Southbridge Board of Directors is following the guidelines set by Pelican Landing for re-opening the community pool. As quoted in the April 20 issue of PL's "In the Know," the Pelican Landing Board "will continue to monitor and follow all governmental restrictions as we roll out any re-openings."

CDD CONTROLS CREEK VEGETATION

Picture

During the "dry season," the creek does not flow quickly enough to keep the vegetation moving downstream. Once the waterway is clogged, getting it open again is difficult. Two years ago, six men from CDD worked for three days to clear the water because they had not maintained it. Thanks to a "forceful" email from Diane Winters, Southbridge board president, CDD began preventive maintenance this week.

SOUTHBRIDGE is a BLOOMING WONDER!

SUMMER ANNUALS BRING FRESH LOOK

Estate Landscaping has installed new flowers at the north end of the bridge and at the entrance to the pool parking lot, adding a pop of vibrant color.

ORCHIDS ARE UP IN THE AIR

Thanks to the many residents who donated their orchids, the trees of Southbridge are blooming! Orchids are usually self-sustaining in the summer heat and tropical rainfall, so outdoor maintenance is minimal. (Note orchids in the tree in the BYOE photo above.)

If you are interested in learning more about the project, in volunteering to be on the committee, or want to donate your orchids, email [email protected] or [email protected].

 IN MEMORIAM:

Helen Blinder, Southbridge resident. Sympathy cards can be sent to Richard Marcus, 3500 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60657.

Allen Reed, former Southbridge resident. Sympathy cards can be sent to Gloria Reed, 3815 Ruff Road, Amanda, Ohio, 43102.

WALKIN' ON THE WILD SIDE

Colleen Smith spotted a great blue heron strutting along the creek bank a few days ago. Minutes later he flew into an oak tree to check out the entree selection in the waterway. Always keep your camera handy!

Charlie Egli emailed, "There are two mommy ducks with babies on our creek! These are a few days old, others about a week. This group has 11 babies, I watched a turtle grab one, now there are 10!!  Sad…. "

MISCELLANEOUS MEMOS:

  • Realtors say they send prospective buyers to the Southbridge Website. Scroll down on the home page to see the slide show. Check out the photos below the calendar on the Social Event Page.
  • Keep trash and recycling bins closed and in your garage. Keep your garage doors closed. Trees are being trimmed which disrupts rodents that will start looking for new homes. Don't have an open door policy at your house!
  • Spread the Southbridge news. Any resident, renter or interested person who has an email address is eligible to receive the Southbridge newsletter; many couples receive individual copies. Send a request to [email protected] to be added to the list. Although nonresidents may receive the newsletter, only residents have access to the private pages on the Website.
  • Check your listing in the residents' contact information on the Website. Bill Riley updates it regularly. You will need access to the private pages to read the contact information. You can request access by going to the Login/Register tab on the Website. You can update your information by emailing Bill at [email protected] .
