During October, our food center volunteers gave 1,644 hours to serve 1,214 families (4,249 individuals). So far this year, as of November 30th, during the 543 hours we were open, our volunteers have given 14,626 hours to serve almost 11,000 families (38,000 individuals).
This year, as of November 30th, our food center has spent $70,000 on food at local grocery stores and the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. We purchase food at a discounted cost and receive TANF grants from the food bank. In addition, we have spent $21,100 on personal care supplies, items that our clients need but cannot purchase with their SNAP benefits cards. We receive most of our produce at no cost from the food bank. The State of Ohio purchases most of the produce and gives it to the food banks to distribute. Local stores donate baked goods for our food center.  We purchase bread from Acme Fresh Market and Schwebel's Outlet Store and eggs from Hillendale Farms.
Charlene Nevada Krummel and George Camilletti have been busy writing grants for our food center and the central office of Good Neighbors. This year, we have less funds coming in and more expenses. Our client visits have increased.
Several days a week, Bill Sudduth picks up and unloads our food orders. He also organizes the food center and annex buildings the night before our large food deliveries. IBH Volunteers are a big help unloading our trucks when we have large orders.
Thursday volunteers Kathy Frye, Ann Tyler, John & Julie Bates and Bonnie have been filling in on days when we are short-staffed.
Recently, Bill Wise spent one of his Saturdays cleaning our cargo van inside and out. He helps George Camilletti with maintaining our food center and annex buildings.
We are happy that Mark & Valerie Lowe Hawks are both healthy and have returned to volunteer on Tuesdays.
The University of Akron Nutrition Students volunteered at our food center in September, October and November.
Student Tyler Cates has been volunteering during summers and holidays with his grandparents John & Julie Bates.
Cara McGuiness has been volunteering on Tuesdays with her grandmother Nancy Broderick.
    Valerie Straw
has been busy coordinating food drives with the local schools for the new school year. We recently received food donations and funds from the following schools: East, Ellet, Harris-Jackson, Hoban, King, Miller South, Resnik, Rimer and Windemere. George Camilletti, Bill Sudduth, Mike Letta, Bill Wise, Paul Iacobucci and Bill Genovese pick up these donations.
Throughout the week, George Camilletti, Bill Sudduth, Mike Letta, Roger & Susan Reynolds, Paul Iacobucci, Bill Wise, Kathy Frye, Jenny Siebert, Deborah Hayden, Bob & Lynn Roberts pick up food from the food bank and local grocery stores.
Jim & Bobbie Stone pick up food from the food bank on Wednesdays when needed. On Thursdays, Bill Genovese and Kelli Heid pick up donations from Panera Bread.
John & Julie Bates purchased and bagged new and gently used Christmas gifts to distribute to our clients. They have done this for the past few years. They donate other items throughout the year.
Monday volunteers Margo Terry, Valerie Straw and Evelyn Balogh donate food, pet food, diapers and other items.
We greatly appreciate the very generous financial donations that Beth & Brad Burch and Jerry McCarty recently made. We thank them for their continued support to help fund our food center. Every year, Russ Murphy from Carter Lumber donates gift cards to help purchase food for the holidays.
Melodye Passidente donated adult diapers, reader glasses and baby formula that she purchased when Rite Aid was having their closing sale.
Star Lodge #187 recently gave a generous financial donation.
Andrea Siebert Kent and the Live Nation Employees at Blossom Music Center donated 176 food items for our food center. Every year, the staff donates food collected at their end of the year party.
During their training week, Chipotle donated a large amount of food from a restaurant they were opening. George Camilletti picked up the food donations and dropped some off at the Valor Home for Veterans.
We appreciate the weekly and monthly donations from Whole Foods, Giant EaglePanera Bread, Humane Society, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Grace Baptist Church, Land O Lakes ButterGoodyear Heights Branch of the Summit County Library and Bright Star Books.
George Camilletti manages our food center, serves as Trustee Chairman and Ways & Means Chairman, raises funds to operate both our food center and the central office of Good Neighbors, orders and picks up food and supplies from the food bank and many other stores, spends his weekends maintaining our food center, office and annex buildings and property. He will be retiring on March 31st, 2025, his 80th birthday.
We appreciate everything he does for our organization.
Our food center is open Monday through Thursday from 12-3 p.m.
We close for major holidays and when the Akron Public Schools are closed due to the weather. This year, we will be closed the week of Christmas. Many of our volunteers need time off to travel and spend time with their families. This is the first year that we will be closed for the week of Christmas. We have been open every week of the year.
Thank you to all of our volunteers and supporters for your generosity and help throughout the year. We appreciate your help so we can continue our mission to help those in need.
