Summer with Growing Up Boulder

Meet Paola!

Picture

We are delighted to welcome Growing Up Boulder's first, paid GUB Youth Intern, Paola Garcia Barron!  Paola is a bilingual and bicultural youth advocate for social issues.  Currently, she is a first year student studying Political Science at the University of Denver. Previously, Paola has taken on roles to build relationships, engage in her community and further anti-racism and social justice efforts, both through Growing Up Boulder, the City's Youth Opportunities Advisory Board, and other organizations. Her work has been recognized with the Women Who Light the Community Emerging Youth Award for building a stronger community in Boulder and the Outstanding Freshman and Outstanding Sophomore awards for scholarship, leadership, character and service at Boulder High School.  As she continues to find her place within the University of Denver, she hopes to foster a positive change and ultimately use her education for that same cause.  To learn more about Paola, visit our website

In June and July 2022, Growing Up Boulder (GUB) and Mayamotion Healing (MMH) hosted a Healing Exhibit at the Museum of Boulder’s Google Garage.

The Healing Exhibit is a continuation of the Healing Day of Remembrance  hosted on April 2 at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Arts, which was created to address the Table Mesa tragedy as well as support healing for other hardships such as wildfires, social injustices, and impacts of Covid.

The “healing activities” offered at Google Garage included art, poetry, letter writing, puzzle-making and more.

This exhibit closes on Tuesday, July 26.  Thank you to the Museum of Boulder for partnering with us!

Healing Report

GUB and our partner, Mayamotion Healing, received a grant from Community Foundation Boulder County to hear how young people wish to heal from the Table Mesa (King Soopers) tragedy and then co-create healing opportunities for themselves and their peers. We are proud to share a report about the first half of this year's work on the grant (see below).

Police Master Plan Window III Report

This spring GUB and our partner, Mayamotion Healing, have been working with young people to gather their input on Boulder's "Reimagining Policing" Project, Window III. Through our partnership with MMH, we used a "healing-centered" approach to learn from and work with our young people on public safety.  To learn more, we invite you to read the Police Master Plan Window III Report below.  For information about Window I and Window II, please visit our website here.

Growing Up Boulder's Vision and Mission

Growing Up Boulder's vision is to lead a global movement in child-friendly cities, resulting in better communities for all. Growing Up Boulder's mission is to offer young people opportunities to participate, deliberate, and influence local issues that affect their lives.

Boulder's Child-Friendly and Teen-Friendly

City Maps

In 2019, Growing Up Boulder embarked upon a year-long journey to co-create the nation's first, printed, bilingual, child-friendly city map.  We did so with almost 800 children and families, half of whom were from underrepresented populations. In May 2022, we published 15,000 copies of our fourth edition map.  Every BVSD Boulder-based preschool and elementary school child received a free map at the end of the school year.  Maps are now available throughout town in public kiosks and city facilities.

Growing Up Boulder's Child- and Teen-Friendly City Maps seek to educate and inspire children, families, and community organizations through the creation of maps co-created with young people and their families to highlight their favorite locations in Boulder. They promote the values of inclusion, diversity, community engagement, collaboration, and celebration
