★★  "What a delight!  With hip and fun graphics, just enough “ick” factor, and plenty of facts, this title offers beginning readers a great deal of information about snails and slugs."
-- School Library Journal STARRED REVIEW

Picture

"This will be a particular joy for the science-minded, but between spotting the snails hidden among rocks and taking a cue from the drawing lesson in back, there’s plenty of fun here for casual readers, too."
     -- Booklist

"Savvy educators will appreciate the book's versatility: It would be the star of an intimate gross-book-themed storytime...or may be used as the inspiration for a pre-K lesson plan on anything from wildlife and nature to gardening to body fluids. Overall, a fun read and a smart selection for any elementary nature shelf."

Good Night, Planet by Liniers and Adele in Sand Land by Claude Ponti are Eisner nominees for Best Publication for Early Readers

The Eisners recognize creative achievement in American comic books. They are sometimes referred to as the comics industry's equivalent of the Oscar Awards. It's exceptional for a small publisher like us to receive 2 nominations. We're incredibly grateful for the recognition and keeping our fingers tightly crossed for Comic-Con San Diego!

...there's
much more to Adele than first meets the eye!?

Besides all the marvelous details and chick jokes everywhere (a trademark of Ponti's work,) Françoise points out that, when you look closely, the story is an exploration of all our senses. Adele begins her journey by entering the mouth of a Sand Dragon. She hears the King scream and he locks her up in a Cage Bird with giant ears; she feels fluffy chicks and tickles the ground; she eats delicious sweets on a dessert island, and she takes a ride in the nose of a giant Snack Man. It goes without saying that her eyes experience constant stimulation!  She even ends her journey through the mouth of the Snack Man, thus concluding the bodily exploration. It’s a tribute to the rich sensory experience that is a day of playing at the park.

The mysterious Skeeter Grant who is credited as the translator is none other than Art Spiegelman (the Pulitzer-prize winning cartoonist and Françoise's longtime collaborator and husband.) The two of them combined their strengths to translate the book together. Françoise’s native language is French and Art, a cartoonist, is aware that you want the text to complement the action depicted in the panels rather than repeat what’s happening. Many of Ponti verbal's jokes didn't make literal sense, so the translators spent days and hours trying to find new jokes in English that fit with the drawings. This lends emotion to the story and calls attention to the global warming subtext, supported by images of the shrinking glacier. Our translators know how to encourage readers to look into pictures and make inferences of their own!
