Turkey Trot artwork contest!

The Ormondale Turkey Trot (1k and 5k run/walk/relay) will be held on Saturday November 4 from 8:00-11:00. Kids love this event! Parents and siblings can run too.

The Turkey Trot is a family event for our community that promotes health and introduces children to athletic competition in a friendly spirit.

This year four students (one from each grade K-3) will have their artwork featured in color on Turkey Trot posters, which will be placed around the school to promote the event. Winning artists will also receive a $25 gift certificate to Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park.

After the Turkey Trot, the winning artists will get to keep their poster as a memento.

Students will be bringing home a form for the Turkey Trot Artwork Contest in their homework folders. Please submit artwork to the Turkey Trot box in the Ormondale school Office by Monday, October 16.

Registration is now open at http://www.pvpto.com/ turkeytrotform.html

Wild west book fair thank you

What a fantastic week at the Book Fair! Thank you to our head wranglers, Sarah Byrne and Angie Stern, for running the PVSD Book Fair and transforming the MUR into an awesome western bookstore!

Sarah Byrne - tremendous thanks to you for your fifth year of Book Fair leadership! Our Book Fairs would not have been the same special and inspiring events without you.  And big thanks this year to Angie and Greg Stern for donating an extremely delicious lunch for the 9/22 teacher Book Fair preview.

Between the Popsicle Preview, Tuesday night Food Truck and the amazing selection of books in the MUR, this team of super volunteers went above and beyond.  Thank you to Ysabel Jou, Eva Diez, Brooke Day, Camilla Lynch, Lorilee Sugden, Ali Cooper, Melenaite Tuitanekai, Erin Sanders, Cori Moesta, Serena Hanes, Nelly Wolfson, Amanda Smoot and Naomi Pritikin for giving us your time and energy this week and for making this event such a successful fundraiser for our two libraries. Thank you to Mr. C for giving up the MUR for the week, Jose for being an invaluable help, Denise for being our "how to get things done" contact and of course Miss Suzy who was there every step of the way.  Also, thanks to 3rd grader Kendall Byrne for her expert help on the cash registers!

And so many thanks to Cyndi Maijala and Kristen Shima for making the CMS Pop Up Book Fair happen over at CMS - and to Kristen and the stellar student council for running the Pop Up and to CMS librarian Molly for helping pull it together.

And, what better way to end the Book Fair week than with a Bagel Breakfast? Huge thanks to Allison and Josh Moser and the 1st grade parents who volunteered to put on a fabulous event for the entire community.  The Breakfast was wildly popular and was a great way to end the Book Fair.

We can't wait for next year's Book Fair!

ormondale closet clean out - thank you

A special thank you to Lalanie Robins who tackled reorganizing and cleaning out the Ormondale PTO closet.  She unearthed all kinds of interesting and useful materials for our future use and, in collaboration with Jose, got our coffee makers and popcorn machine back in top form.

brie mathers on body image - parent education night at CMS

Next Monday, October 2nd, we will be hosting a Parent Education Night with guest speaker Brie Mathers and we are inviting all district parents to attend.  This will take place in our MUR from 7-8:30pm.

Brie will be speaking specifically with the 7th and 8th grade girls and boys- in separate sessions- on Monday and Tuesday of next week during a 60 minute assembly. She will be talking to the kids about body positivity, media literacy, mental health, mindfulness and group empathy.

For the parent night, she will focus on engaging parents in conversations at the heart of girl culture such as body image, dieting, hyper sexualization, sexting and looks-based competition. Participants learn the benefits of protective factors such as the dad/daughter connection and resilience-building factors such as empathy, yoga, mindfulness and communicating with compassion.

She'll also focus on young men, and the toxic "man up" culture that has arisen out of strait jacket gender constructions – the pressure to appear in control, compete to win, and exert toughness over softer, stereotypically feminine traits like vulnerability and empathy. We also examine the pressures young women face and how guys can rally to become their allies.  The parent workshop is grounded in creating a sense of belonging, and highlighting socio-emotional life practices that work.

We hope you can make this parent education event! Even though her work with our students is in the middle school grades, she recommends this parent workshop to the lower grades as well, so please mark your calendars for Monday, October 2nd from 7-8:30pm in the CMS MUR.
