Moving Forward Together

The Craft Made Baltimore show was amazing -- thanks to all of you who came by!  I'm always inspired by what I hear from you.  It's thrilling when the art that moves me also moves you.

You bought quite a few wall pieces,  so I'm busy making more!  I'm continuing to combine silver with glass in my "silvitrum" work, as seen at left.  I'm also framing more of my work in wood frames.

The Joy of Spring

I'm loving making flower garden pictures -- the colors are just so beautiful.  I like the sense of depth and the organic forms created when I push the temperature boundaries to make the glass move in the kiln.  It is definitely hard to communicate in a photo, so I hope you might have a chance to see this piece in person at one of my shows.

Bloom

And of course I'm always making jewelry -- inspired by the colors of spring. I love turquoise, pink, and purple any time of year, but they seem especially appropriate in this season of blooms!

April Shows

Artomatic is an art extravaganza that you don't want to miss, and since it runs through April 28th, you don't have to!  Artomatic has taken over a former office building at 2101 M St NW, near Dupont Circle, with nearly 1000 artists exhibiting every type of art.  April 13th is the second Meet the Artist Day.  I will be there from about 5 to 8 in room 5025.  I hope to see you. I will have treats!  But come by any time -- I am in and out during the weekend. Let me know when you're coming in case I'm around!  Hours and event schedule here.

I will be showing my art at three shows this month.  First up is the Unique Boutique at Beth El Congregation, Sunday and Monday April 7th and 8th 10 to 5 at 8101 Park Heights Ave, Baltimore.  I will be showing both jewelry and glass art.

Classes and Workshops

Three Session Class -- Diving Deep into Glass Jewelry

Picture
Heather made all these jewelry pieces in the 3-session class

We had a great jewelry class in January!  I'm ready to schedule more, but I heard from you that evening classes are difficult for folks who do not live  close by (traffic!). So I'm trying another schedule for the next Three Session Glass Jewelry Class.  We'll start on Friday afternoon from 4-7, continue on Saturday from 1-4, and finish on Sunday from 1-4.   The next class is scheduled for May 24th, 25th and 26th.  We'll begin by layering up a gorgeous dichroic glass cabochon. (I can't resist buying every amazing design I see, so I have plenty of variety!)  In the next two classes we will cut, grind and drill that into multiple pieces, learn from what we did, explore silver settings, and make some more!    Click HERE for link to more information and to sign up.

Workshop Schedule

I have my usual plate and jewelry workshops scheduled for April and June.  New for the plate workshop -- make a plate OR two sun catchers!  Details and to sign up click here.

Looking for the New

Seven years ago, I started making silver settings for my glass jewelry because I thought the beauty of the glass warranted being featured in silver settings. Now, I'm having similar thoughts about my wall art -- perhaps it deserves a frame?  I have been incorporating (usually white) glass frames around my pieces, but I've discovered two new options that I'm exploring.  First, I'm trying out "floating" wooden frames that set the glass piece in a maple frame, as with Moving Forward Together, above.  It adds cost, but I think it's worth it.

I'm also setting some of my pieces on copper as a frame, sometimes treating it with a heat patina that reflects the colors in the glass.  I use 16- or 18-gauge copper so the corners will not bend.  Looking for the New is an example of that approach.

Let me know what you think: wood, or copper, or just glass?
