The Nation’s Only Duty-Free Gasoline Stations Must Comply With Federal Environmental Laws

In Ammex v. Michigan Department of Agriculture, the United States Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit, affirmed the district court decision against Ammex, a company that runs only duty-free gasoline station in the US. The station qualifies as a duty-free store because it’s located at the foot of the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario and Ammex exclusively sources its gasoline from foreign trade zones, under United States federal customs law, the gasoline it sells never enters domestic commerce. 

The US Government Collects $1,827,242.65 Against Unnamed North Korean Entities

Did you know that the US Government can sue a dollar amount?  In in rem forfeiture actions, the US Government can name the dollar amounts when the names of the defendants are not available.  The latest case is U.S. v.  $1,827,242.65, a forfeiture lawsuit in the District Court for the District of Columbia. The ill-gotten money originated from a scheme by financial institutions in North Korea to launder funds through the U.S. financial system in violation of U.S. sanctions. The court granted a default judgment in favor to the US Government.
