Earthquake Preparedness: Are you ready? | |
|
We all love living in this part of the country, surrounded by beautiful nature. But along with that beauty comes the risk of "The Big One" - a massive earthquake that could reach a magnitude 9, shaking the ground for up to five minutes. We're overdue for such an event, and it would be devastating.
Instead of fearing what we can’t control, let’s focus on what we can: being as prepared as possible.
October 17th is National ShakeOut Day where people around the world will participate in earthquake drills at their workplaces. Are you ready? Make sure you have a plan in place.
Here are some important questions to consider to ensure you're prepared:
-
Supplies: Do you have enough emergency supplies for those in your care? OAR and MCAR require a minimum supply of food and water for three days, but experts recommend stocking up for at least two weeks.
-
Utility shut-off: Do you know how to shut off utilities in your home? Familiarize yourself with the locations of shut-offs for water, natural gas, and electricity.
-
Generators: If you have a backup generator, do you test it regularly? If you don't have a generator, consider getting one.
-
Emergency Plan: Is your list of emergency contacts up-to-date, and have you reviewed your emergency preparedness plan recently, specifically your plan in the event of an earthquake?

Remember, when it comes to earthquake preparedness, the key is to plan ahead and be ready!
