How is the global pandemic affecting La Escuela Cooperativa in Sayulita? Joining the millions of children around the world who are isolated from each other, our 3-5 year olds are also now at home. Mexico closed all schools in early March. Since then our teachers, Dulce and Nancy, have been working harder than ever as they advise families on how to create learning activities at home. As you will see through the photos here, our children are reading, writing and applying the practical life skills taught through the Montessori method while at home.

Like families all over the world, our parents are learning how to apply teaching skills at home. We believe that all parents teach every day, but at a time when they are also experiencing unemployment and other personal hardships, it is difficult to juggle a more formal schooling component to their day. We applaud them all!

We miss the children but are happy to see that they have not lost their excitement for learning.

Parents are sharing messages through a WhatsApp stream where they can talk to one another and ask questions. They often express how much their children are missing their teachers and friends.

While Escuela is missing its happy children, the school is not empty. It has become the central depository for a food bank in Sayulita. We joined forces with other local organizations to buy, store, sanitize, package and distribute food to families in the community who have lost their jobs. Many of our parents and teachers were among the volunteers to package the food for delivery.

For this story to continue, we need you to share our excitement.

During this time, more than ever, we need your support. Our families  and teachers continue to strengthen the cooperative nature of our school while they also struggle with personal challenges brought on by the pandemic. In August, we will welcome seven new children from our waiting list of 25. Most will pay no tuition, yet it costs $1500 a year to educate one child. We hope you will join us by sponsoring a child. Our tuition-free school is only possible through individuals like you who believe that early access to education is the key to lifelong learning.
