AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS SURVEY

The PTO is trying to gauge interest level in virtual after school programs for the 2020-2021 school year. At this time, the PTO is not able to hold in-person meet ups even if they are small groups and socially distanced so the following survey is for virtual programs only.

Please note this survey is for information gathering purposes only! We will need sufficient interest and volunteer support in order to run any after school programs.

Complete the survey here: https://forms.gle/YSmQqobWs8YD7yT1A

TUE, 10/13 PARENT COFFEE CHAT with MS. SHIMA

The next Parent Coffee Chat with Ms. Shima will be Tuesday, October 13th at 8:45am. The focus of this chat will be on High School Transition. This session is mainly for 7th and 8th grade families and will dive into the high school process - public, private, and charter - and we will go over data from our CMS graduates, but it's open to any parent that is interested! The virtual session link will be sent out in a few weeks, and this meeting will also be recorded for those that cannot attend.

FROM CHAOS TO CALM: Building Teen Resilience & Agency

Common Ground Speaker Series Upcoming Event

FROM CHAOS TO CALM
Building Teen Resilience & Agency
Featuring Laura Kastner, PhD
In conversation with
Nanci Kauffman, Head of Castilleja School

Thurs Oct 8
7pm–8:15pm PDT

Parenting teens is not easy, even in ideal circumstances. But parenting with imposed social distancing when adolescents thrive on face-to-face interactions creates new challenges. Dr. Laura Kastner identifies resilience and personal agency as key strengths that can help both parents and teens in these complex times. She will provide parents with action-oriented, effective strategies for encouraging coping, problem-solving, and optimism in our teens.

For event details, visit the Common Ground Website.

Foundation News

How is the PVSF Different From the PTO?

PVSF. PTO. PVSD. What is this - alphabet soup?

Three different acronyms, three different organizations, three different purposes.

The Portola Valley Schools Foundation (PVSF) raises money that goes directly into the District’s annual budget (via the Annual Campaign), supports innovation in our children’s education (via the Endowment Fund), and funds specific programs (at the biennial FANFare event). Without your generous donation to the PVSF, important programs such as STEM, Science, Music, Art, PE and more would suffer cutbacks.

The Portola Valley Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), by contrast, promotes the education and welfare of students by strengthening the relationship between home and school through fun and educational events. It puts on the popular Bingo Night and Book Fair, cultural assemblies and parent education series. The PTO also recruits volunteers, organizes the teacher appreciation weeks, prints the school directory and publishes this newsletter.

And the PVSD, of course, is our school district, which depends heavily on both of these other fundraising groups. So when the time comes, remember to support both the PVSF and the PTO for the benefit of … you guessed it … the PVSD.
