YOUNG ARTIST

HUMAN BEINGS

"You can do it, but you're going about it like you can't."

Brett Martin and Dario De La Puente were my classmates at

jacqueline m walsh school for the arts in pawtucket, rhode island.

it is an underfunded public arts high school in rhode island, the only one in the state in fact.

most of our time working together in high school was attempting to conjure some sort of inspiration to make the film assignments we were given.

for years we were restrained to only using the hallways in the school and no where else.

despite this we had the opportunity to use the school's cameras, mics, expensive lighting and other equipment that none of us owned at the time.

now it seems things have flipped.

dario and brett film using their phones and free editing software, but they are making what they want.

so who needs a budget when you got heart.

for a long time the only context i saw wadiel, evin and tommac from was skateboarding.

skateboarding is unique because you don't have to say much to others, in order to form a connection.

for many skaters there is already a shared connection with others through personal experience with the board.

it's an activity that teaches you quickly that in order to improve and succeed, you must fail first.

i've met a more diverse group of people than any team sport or club i hav e been a part of provided.

The reason i continue to skate is because of the freedom i feel while doing it and the people i've met along the way (you know who you are.)

It's a culture that accepts and embraces differences, and i think that this is a motivator for young people such as the members of alkaline pvd to either start or continue creating with their friends.

alkaline's formation is reminIscent of my days in high school spent creating art and skating with my friends almost daily.

the three bandmates are almost always together when i see them, and if they aren't, the others usually aren't far behind.

they haven't released their own sounds yet, but when they do you'll be able to find them through their socials  ~ @alkalinepvd on instagram.

keep pushing. on and off the board. all of you.
