OUTRAGE is also a community youth-led advocacy group that also focuses on tobacco use prevention and education. This event was a great opportunity for ITAT and OUTRAGE to come together to learn more about the dangers of tobacco and vape products, leadership skills, and mental health. It is wonderful to see youth in action! The two day training ended at Nickel City arcade in Provo. This gave ITAT and OUTRAGE the opportunity to work together and play together. Tobacco Facts: MY LIFE MY QUIT: mylifemyquit.com is a new service available to teens, to assist them in quitting the highly addictive nicotine products that comprise the teen vaping epidemic. All they need to do is text "Start My Quit" 855-891-9989 to talk or text with a quit coach to cheer them on in their journey of quitting! In a study done on Black and Latinx adults, they found that "Stress associated with friend strain, lifetime discrimination, and attending appointments for psychotropic medication management were associated with cigarette smoking". -tandfonline In 2020, one in five high schoolers was an e-cigarette user. Almost all [high school e-cigarette users] use flavored e-cigarettes, which remain widely available after partial flavor restrictions in January 2020 exempted many products, notably disposable and menthol-flavored products . (Utah DOH, center4research.com , tobaccofreekids.org, truthinitiative.org ) Life Is Worth Living Facts: An average of 627 Utahns die from suicide (1) and 4,574 Utahns attempt*(2) suicide each year. Overall, more Utahns are hospitalized or treated in an emergency department (ED) for suicide attempts than are fatally injured. Utah had the fifth-highest age-adjusted suicide rate in the U.S. during this time period.
