Ormondale’s 2nd Grade’s Superfood for November:  APPLES!

by Mrs. Wong's Second Graders

Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Did you know that apples have been around for 2 million years? They originated in Southeast Asia. Then, colonists from England brought apple seeds and seedlings over to the United States. The colonists were surprised to discover that the Native American Indians already had apple seeds and were growing apple trees.

Apple trees start the process of growing apples in the Spring. Apple blossoms grow and are pollinated by bees and the wind. When the blossoms die, they turn into small apples that grow throughout the Spring and Summer. They are ready to pick in the late Summer or early Fall. Did you know that about 250 million bushels of apples are harvested in the United States each year?

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Here are some ways that apples help keep us health! Apples are good for your heart, our immune system and to make our teeth white and bright. Eating apples helps to detoxify your liver and help fight against diabetes.

To be healthy, be sure to eat an apple a day!

The second grade would like to thank Robert's Market for donating each month's Superfood.

TK/K CHICKEN COOP

Of all the memories our children will treasure from their time at Ormondale, the chicken coop will loom large. But after years of tough love from adoring kindergarteners, it was time for some improvements and the teachers saw untapped potential for additional academic lessons around it. A grant from the Portola Valley Schools Foundation helped the District upgrade what they call the “Chicken Love” program so that another decade of young learners will benefit from the hands-on learning opportunities it provides.

The grant provided for four new incubators to hatch chicks in each of the TK and kindergarten classrooms, outdoor bulletin and chalk boards to display life cycle diagrams and tally the  number of eggs laid, gopher wire to prevent predators from getting in, safer steps for the children to enter, a new feeding system to  keep rodents out and food dry, a shed to protect the kids’ rainboots and tools, and more. It also paid for a compost bin to transform the chicken poop into compost for the 2nd grade garden on the other side of campus.

“The health benefits of cooking with more nutritious and tastier eggs from our own personal hens teaches little ones the importance of natural life cycles, a connection to healthy living, and greater appreciation for the environment,” the kindergarten teachers wrote in their grant. ”By becoming better stewards of the earth, students develop self-confidence, discipline and skills to become respectful citizens toward animals.”
