It’s been a while my friends! Thank you, as always, for having me stop by your inbox this month. We’re shaking it up and doing things a little differently for this issue of the column.  I’ve gotten some help from the extended ICYT universe – this month we are tackling the topic of Cheap Eats/Bang for your Buck meals. What does that mean you may ask? The first thought that comes to mind is what’s something that’s going to fill my tummy, but not break the bank. The stipulations I gave the team was to choose their favourite meal for around $15 and of course had to be from a local restaurant. I’m excited to share with you some of our favourite wallet friendly spots around the city.

Noodleholic - 9658 107 A Ave, Edmonton, AB

For me, nothing beats a bowl of noodle soup. Noodleholic offers a tasty bowl of noodle soup I often crave. Their signature deal is a build your own noodle soup for ($13.95). The first choice to be made is the broth – there are 8 different ones to choose from ranging from Satay, Curry Laksa, and Cilantro & Century Egg. Noodles are the next thing to be chosen, with 12 different variety of noodles to choose from you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Last and not least, you get to choose 2 toppings: from a selection of meats, vegetables, seafood – the world is yours!

My go to order is the Little Sheep Broth, Udon Noodles, Sliced Beef Brisket and Baby Bok Choy plus a couple spoons of their house made chili oil. Some of their panfried dumplings ($4.00) on the side and an Iced Milk Tea ($1.50) to wash it all down makes for one of my favourite meals.

The staff are always warm, friendly, and grateful for all the customers that come through their doors. Doesn’t take much to convince me to stop by for a big bowl of noodle soup. – Tyler Mah (@tyler.s.mah)

Dookbaeki Korean Restaurant - 2872 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton, AB

With the cold winter days coming, my go-to place for a hot bowl of deliciousness would be Dookbaeki. They have a large selection of Korean stews to choose from ranging from $15-$18 with my favourite being number 4 on the menu, also known as the Sogogi-Soontubu. It is a spicy broth packed with beef briskets, soft tofu, and vegetables served with a steaming hot bowl of rice on the side- all for only $15!! It definitely hits the soup craving for me and I highly recommend checking this restaurant out if you haven’t already. I always leave with a full, happy, warm and fuzzy tummy! - Steph Truong (@lololsteph)

SFC Seoul Fried Chicken – 7904b 104 St NW, Edmonton, AB

Seoul Fried Chicken (or SFC for short) has some of the best fried chicken in the city, at some of the most affordable prices.

For $15, you can order the 5-piece chicken set, which comes with your choice of a chicken flavour, a 1/2 order of salad, fries or corn fritter, and a drink. Sometimes they even toss in an extra piece of chicken, which is always a welcome surprise.

My go-to order would have be the 5-piece set of G.P. Cheese fried chicken (where the chicken is smothered in grano padano cheese and bits of zest/parsley), with mac & cheese pesto, fries, and a can of Sprite on the side.

If you’re looking to get your fix of delicious fried chicken for the day on a budget, I’d definitely recommend hitting up SFC! – Chris Mercado (@murkado)

Yoshi Express - 10443 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB

Good Japanese comfort food from good people. I love supporting Alan because he is the sweetest! The pork katsu bento is my go-to because I love the crispy and juicy katsu, this one comes with a sauce that also reminds me of A5 steak sauce. There's a pork katsu curry option too, but I love the acidity of the bento sauce with the fried katsu. The bento comes with rice, a little salad, and two gyoza. If you're in the area, definitely stop by. I think it's also good to remember that we should continuously support the businesses that we want to keep seeing in our communities, even after the hype, to make sure that they survive over time. – Kaye Abril (@salvahoedali)

Spirit Bistro - 10824 97 St Unit # 3 NW, Edmonton, AB

Edmonton’s China town is no stranger to good family restaurants, but a personal  favourite is Spirit Bistro. It’s a family owned Chinese restaurant on the corner of 108th Ave and 97th Street and my go to for cost effective takeout that keeps me full for an entire day. The space is quaintly decorated with some little novelty items here and some Nike Dunks there. My item of choice is their Dinner for 1 which comes in 3 versions: 1A, 1B, or 1C. They all come with a big serving of chicken fried rice, beef with mixed veggies and a spring roll. Depending on which option you select the meal is paired with either sweet and sour pork, sweet and sour chicken balls, or deep fried shrimp to complete an absolutely loaded meal that is well worth the price. Tip well! – Alfred Ovakporaye (@ayefreydo)

Smoke & Ash - 104 9817 266st, Acheson, AB

This is off the beat and path for most, but I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for good bbq at a terrific price point. They have a variety of good options at less than $15 to start with and the portions are healthy if not on the verge of an overstuff. I chose the Chicken N Chips this time around. "Roasted not smoked, breaded chicken leg and thigh similar to Shake N Bake with a generous portion of French fries." And all for just $14. Maybe you don't want chicken, perhaps brisket and fries for $10 is more your speed. Or maybe you wanted bbq with sides. How about a choice of meat with 2 sides for, you guessed it, $14! Oh a burger is more your thing? How about the Carnivore with Fries. A patty topped with cheese and bacon plus your choice of smoked meat. Topped with house made Whiskey Jack BBQ Sauce and Aioli. Again $14.

I dare you to find a better option for delicious bbq anywhere in the city. - Ian Chow (@ianternetmaster)
