Q&A on The Blues Brothers

Two attendees at one of our Blues Brothers talks last week posed great questions about the movie, which I answer here:

  1. How did Steven Spielberg's cameo in The Blues Brothers come about? Spielberg's cameo as Cook County Tax Assessor was essentially a favor. Spielberg had given John Landis a cameo in his film comedy 1941—which also featured Belushi and Aykroyd—so Landis returned the favor by giving Spielberg a cameo in The Blues Brothers.
  2. Was Elwood Blues (Dan Ackroyd) named after Elwood, IL? The 1980 book Blues Brothers: Private, written and designed by Belushi's wife and a friend, provides us with a backstory: as a baby, Elwood Blues was abandoned at a newspaper stand and found by policeman Mike Delaney, so the character's birth name is Elwood Delaney. Based on Elwood's "birth certificate," Calumet City is listed as city of residence. But the SNL Wiki says Delaney found the baby in Elwood, IL, and a few books covering Route 66 suggest that, Elwood Blues was indeed named after the village of Elwood, IL. So we'll go with...yes, probably...maybe.

Yep, we're still celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Blues Brothers! The talk is free, takes place online, and anyone with an email address can attend!
