September 2024 Core Virtues News The great academic adventure begins! As we welcome children back to school, our classroom virtue focus is on community building: creating an environment of respect for each other, for the task of learning, and responsibility for both. Building friendship s is also a very important part of the new year. Our September tab is chockful of outstanding books on these themes, ranging from We Don't Eat Our Classmates and The Invisible Boy to The Day of Ahmed's Secret and Damon and Pythias and the Test of Friendship. Read and be inspired! Passing the Torch: Introducing Our New Director, Gabrielle Lewis Now under the stewardship of Hillsdale College, Core Virtues is thrilled to introduce Gabrielle Lewis as our new director. Gabrielle is Teacher Support Lead for Hillsdale's K-12 Education Office. She has had rich experience with the Core Virtues program from her time as a classroom teacher, then Dean of Academics, and Lower School Principal at a classical charter school in Spring Hill, Florida. Core Virtues Founder and Director of thirty-plus years, Mary Beth Klee, is delighted to be passing this torch. Heroes of Friendship Two venerable founders and friends are our heroes of friendship this month. Friends sometimes disagree! Massachusetts-born John Adams and Virginia-reared Thomas Jefferson were a study in contrasts, but respect for their joint tasks and for each other drew the two unlikely friends together, even as they diverged on key approaches. Between 1812 and 1826, the aging friends exchanged more than 300 letters and wished each other well before they died (yup, both of them) on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the nation's independence. What Else Is New? Our slender new "coffee break" book is a compendium of Telling Our Stories essays that we have featured for teachers over the years. One cup of coffee (or tea) is just about enough time for one essay -- and a chat with friends. This book will be an affordable addition to any teachers' lounge (where we know that teachers seldom lounge). Why not order a dozen? Telling Our Stories This September we celebrate our new director and the friends who have made Core Virtues possible! Read More |
