The purpose of Good Neighbors is to help families and individuals in times of crisis and need with clothing, emergency food and support.

    In addition to purchasing groceries and other items to distribute to our clients and the cost of operating our units, we have the expense of liability, property and governing board insurance which is $18,016 this year and $2,000 annually for our Federal 990 and Ohio Charitable fee.        We are grateful to our donors and volunteers who support our mission and make it possible to help those in need.

Happy 70th Anniversary to Richard and Wilma McMasters!
Wilma continues to serve as our Thursday food center crew leader and takes care of clients at the intake desk, cleans and organizes our food center, co-manages our Superior-Wooster Unit, and serves on our governing board as the Good Neighbors Assistant Treasurer. 
Richard is a past volunteer who turned 93 last February.

    During the month of July, our food center volunteers served 1,248 families (4,458 individuals).  From January through August, our volunteers gave 10,810 hours to serve more than 8,243 families (28,765 individuals).  Our client visits have increased and our funding has decreased.  The Government's fiscal year begins October 1st, which is when the budget cuts take effect.  SNAP benefits will be cut and the amount of food and support from the USDA to the food banks will be reduced.  From January through August, our food center spent $51,000 on food and $11,200 on hygiene items.
    We greatly appreciate everything that our City of Akron Ward 10 Council Representative Sharon Connor does for Good Neighbors and our food center.  Thank you, Sharon!
    Bill & Joyce Kingsmill donated a large amount of Campbell's Soup.
    Every year, Mr. Mast donates fresh produce.
    Kelli Patterson, the granddaughter of Thursday volunteer Kelli Heid, donated toys and clothing for our clients. 
    Green Valley United Methodist Church continues to donate  items left from their rummage sales to distribute to our clients.
    Many of our volunteers not only donate their time but they purchase much needed items to distribute to our clients. 
    Our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of Eva Gump. Eva volunteered on Tuesdays for many years.  We thank her family for having the memorial donations sent to our food center.
    Continued prayers for Jim Cuckler, Judy Wilson, Darleen Strawn Slater and the Wise Family. 
    Thank you to Janice Cuckler for filling in at the client intake desk when we were short staffed this summer.
    We appreciate the recent financial donations from past volunteers   Holly Aughenbaugh, Bob Wilson and Darleen Strawn Slater.
    Many of our volunteers brought their grandchildren to volunteer over the summer. Every year, Archbishop Hoban High School Students volunteer over the summers and holidays.
    George Camilletti is working on a logo for our food center.
    Forty letters were sent to schools in Akron asking them to collect nonperishable food for our food center.  Most of these schools hold food drives for us every year.
    Thank you to Sara Schaefer, the students and staff at Firestone High School for their recent donation of canned foods.
    Every week, Whole Foods, Giant Eagle and Panera Bread donates food to us.  Every month, Westminster Presbyterian Church donates groceries and personal care items and funds quarterly. Grace Baptist Church sends a monthly financial donation.  The Humane Society donates pet food.
    We spend about $300 a week on bread.  We purchase bread from Acme and the Schwebel's outlet store.  We purchase our brown paper bags and toilet tissue from Restaurant Depot.  We purchase our food from the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and recently purchased bar soap from there, too.
    Interval Brotherhood Home Volunteers continue to help unload our large food orders.
    Kathy Frye, Bill Sudduth, Mike Letta, Jenny Siebert, Debbie Hayden, Bob & Lynn Roberts, Bill Wise, Paul Iacobucci, Bill Genovese, Kelli Heid, Roger & Susan Reynolds, Gail McAlister, Jim & Bobbie Stone pick up food from the food bank and other stores. 
    George Camilletti continues to help as needed.
    Kathy Frye manages our food center, keeps it clean and organized, places orders for food and supplies, and helps to pick up the orders.
    Bill Wise maintains our food center, office and annex buildings and property.  Thank you Bill for installing a security camera in our lobby!
    Charlene Nevada Krummel serves as the Good Neighbors Ways & Means Chair. She has been busy writing grants to fund our food center and central office.  Most grants are submitted in the Fall.
    Our food center is open Monday through Thursday from 12-3 p.m., every week of the year, we close for most holidays.

Community:
School Supply Giveaway: During the month of August, we distributed 537 backpacks to our local clients' children.  They were filled to the brim with grade level supplies.  We are wishing all students a successful year!  We thank our very generous individual donors, churches and local companies who made it possible to distribute and purchase supplies.

HiHo Brewing Company - Front Street
Nothing Bundt Cakes - Stow Plaza
A special shout out to Holy Family Catholic Church and First Christian Church whose young volunteers came to assist us in sorting supplies and donations. 
Silver Lake Country Club chose Cuyahoga Falls Good Neighbors  as its recipient for its Charity Golf Classic.  Over 60 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day on the fabulous Silver Lake Country Club course.  The outing raised over $10,000.  We will share the pot with their Employee Care Foundation.  We want to recognize the following Volunteers who pitched in to make the outing successful:

Aaron White, VP, Portage Community Bank - Sponsored a hole.

Donation Drives:
The following have made commitments to provide children's gifts and toiletries for our Old-Fashioned Holiday 2025:  ATA Tools, TPV Poke Center, Stow Middle & Elementary Schools, and Dr. Davis Eye Center.
Details and wish lists will be available in October.

Volunteers:
Please join us in welcoming 10 new volunteers!  Amy, Chris, Andy, Don, Rita, Marguerite, Tom, Lauren, Phil and Kelly!  They all bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and fun to the team.  We will have a team meeting in October but in the meantime - say hello!
Winter Holiday - We will be closed after distribution on December 18th - January 6th, 2026.

    Chris Krinjeck Bolyard manages the Ellet Unit and reported that they helped 20 students returning to school. Each family received school supplies and Walmart gift cards to help purchase shoes and clothing.  
    Over the summer, we served about 15 families a month. Families and individuals visiting our unit received a food order and visited our clothing rooms.
    During the month of September, we will be open for donations only.

    Patricia Stiles manages the Green Unit.
​    Nancy Hall reported that with your help, we provided over 90 students with backpacks and school supplies. We will accept donations of backpacks throughout the year. We scored big for next Fall's Back-to-School, backpack program. We picked up 43 backpacks at Walmart for an average price of $4 each. Building our supplies back up.
    In September, we started switching our clothing room to fall and winter items. We accept donations on Wednesday mornings until 11:30, or you can call or message us for an appointment to drop off items.  
    We are sending out letters for our Christmas gift program. The client has to be up-to-date and have children from birth up to teens still attending high school. We solicit "Santas" from our local churches and businesses that have helped in the past. We are going to use our Facebook page to ask for additional help.
    We have great community support and wonderful volunteers.
    Drive through food distribution is permanently in place.
    Clothing distribution is in the building.

    Wilma McMasters and Lee Thomas manage the Superior-Wooster Clothing Unit and reported that they are always in need of baby diapers, personal care items and new underclothing.
    They purchased and distributed new underclothing to families with students returning to school.        
​    They are grateful to Green Good Neighbors for assisting with clothing donations and to Centenary United Methodist Church for allowing them to use their building.

    Candy Lorkowski manages the Tallmadge Unit and reported that they would like to welcome our newest volunteer, Sudi Hayford. She not only helps at the unit, she also brings in produce from her garden.
    We gave out what school supplies we had and were also able to give each child a gift card for new shoes.
    Our unit is very blessed to have such great community support.
