Teen-Friendly Park Realized
In 2016, Growing Up Boulder worked with middle and high school students to design their ideal "teen-friendly parks." Shortly thereafter, the City of Boulder added some of the elements requested by young people to parks around town. In 2018, as part of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, teens echoed the request for teen-specific spaces and activities. Now, in 2023, the City has added a new section designed for (and with) teens to the beloved Scott Carpenter "Rocketship" Park! GUB staff checked out the teen-friendly equipment last month and found teens and families enjoying the new spaces. More teen-specific park features will be added in the near-future to North Boulder Park. Thank you City of Boulder for listening to our teens!

Columbine Students at City Council
Three 4th grade Columbine Elementary School students spoke at City Council a month ago in support of a flood mitigation plan for Upper Goose Creek and Twomile Canyon Creek. The children’s confidence came from a year-long study of "Nature Connection, Action, and Hope," which was conducted as a partnership amongst Growing Up Boulder, Columbine 4th grade classrooms, teacher librarian Jeanette Scotti, the City’s Open Space and Mountain Parks Department, the City’s Utilities Departments, and Classrooms for Climate Action. This project (read the report here) brought to life Growing Up Boulder's mission: to offer young people opportunities to participate, deliberate, and influence local issues that affect their lives!
CFCI Kick-Off Workshop with City Staff
After a successful launch of Boulder’s Child Friendly City Initiative on 4/29, GUB and the City of Boulder hosted a workshop for City Staff Champions to learn more about CFCI and offer input to the first part of the process. Three teens from the City’s Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB) shared their role in the CFCI process and contributed to the day. City Staff Champions are representatives from fourteen city departments who will offer input to key parts of CFCI process and will also convey back essential communication about CFCI to their departments. During the workshop, participants took stock of which programs and services the city offers that affect children’s lives and also offered opinions about which government indicators are most crucial to assess the well-being of Boulder children. Stay tuned for next steps in the CFCI process!
Friends School Map-Making with GUB
| |
|
Growing Up Boulder recently worked with first graders at Friend's School on a wonderful map-making project! Together, we helped children create a playground map that the school could use to showcase their facilities to prospective families and students. Our team shared GUB’s process for creating our own Child-Friendly City map with the students and encouraged them to apply similar techniques to their own space. We enjoyed working with such enthusiastic and creative students, and our graphic designer, Nettie Skievaski, helped assemble their final drafts into a beautiful and informative map. We hope the Friend's School playground map inspires more schools and young people to explore the world of map making!

Optimist Club Presentation
| |
On Wednesday, May 17th, Growing Up Boulder presented to the Optimist Club about Boulder’s Child Friendly City Initiative (CFCI) and the value of engaging children and youth in decisions that affect them. Optimist members had a chance to embrace their inner child and engage in a participatory planning exercise. Thank you, Optimist Club, for the invitation and for learning about our work!
