Fall 2018 Newsletter Letter from The President By: Lucinette Alvarado, CIH - President, Pittsburgh AIHA ¡Hola a todos! I am so excited to be the President of the AIHA Local Pittsburgh Section during the 2018-2019 term. Lately, I had the opportunity to participate in workshops provided by AIHA and I must say that these were very fulfilling. I am an AIHA Future Leaders Institute (FLI) Class of 2018 graduate! This workshop took place in Washington DC from September 20 to 23, 2018. I learned so much about myself as well as how to be a great leader. One of the things that were important was that to be a leader is not just one person is a team. A team with different ideas and styles will make a difference. It is very important to work as a team for a common goal and to know and accept each other. Our goal is for the AIHA Local Pittsburgh Section to be successful. From what I heard and saw from meetings with the other AIHA Local Sections, we are a strong group. We need to keep it that way and I need your help. If you have ideas on events educational and/or social, please feel free to contact us. I encourage you to be brave and step up to host and/or organize an event. Let’s be mentors and examples to the students who are working hard to be professionals in the near future. Let’s give back to the community who needs people like us to keep them safe. As Mr. Gene Kranz, NASA flight Director Gemini & Apollo missions always said: “Failure is not an option”. Old or new in the profession, retired or still working, academia or industry, let’s do this for the team. I guarantee you will feel like a superhero. At least that is how I feel in this profession. Let’s make it happen! I hope you guys are doing great in your work and personal lives. I am confident that I will hear from you. ¡Èxito! Lucinette Pittsburgh AIHA News From Our Blog: Register NOW! AIHA Student Member, Summer Wilde (Slippery Rock University) created a Pittsburgh AIHA membership flyer to recruit new student members for the Pittsburgh Local Section. Summer spoke with Dr. Cali, the Safety Chairperson at SRU who agreed to send the flyer out to all of the safety students as well as have paper copies available outside of the safety office. Summer also met with nearly all of the Safety Dept. professors who said that they would talk about the flyer and membership to the Pittsburgh AIHA in their classes. Hopefully there will be enough interest among SRU students to someday start a Slippery Rock AIHA Student Section. Summer was grateful for this opportunity to help recruit students and get involved with the AIHA. The Executive Committee would like to thank Summer for taking the lead to create the flyer and generate interest among students/professors in the Pittsburgh AIHA.
