News for October 2023

President's Message

Greetings Friends!

Well, it is October and we have a busy October/Fall planned.  October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month so we ask that you please wear purple to our Zoom Membership meeting to help raise awareness around domestic violence. The Greenlight Operation Gala is Thursday, October 19th along with the DVCSP Candlelight Vigil being held on the same date.  Please be aware for planning purposes.

Please join us as we meet via Zoom for our October 12th Membership Meeting!  Lori Heenan from the Girl Scouts Heart of PA and Rep. Tarik Khan will be our guest speakers.

Please save the date of the Zonta Says No to Human Trafficking Assembly focusing on Statewide Legislation for regulating Massage Parlors.  The Assembly will be indoors on Wednesday, November 15th beginning at 10AM.  10AM-11AM Tables set up for sundry invited organizations to share information and network with one another.  11AM-noon will be the Assembly with multiple speakers regarding the legislation.  We are partnering with Greenlight Operation for this event.

We will be having our November Membership Meeting via Zoom on Thursday, November 9th.

Please feel free to Voxer or email me with any ideas you may have for the upcoming year or future.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our October meeting.

Cheers, Amy

If you know of someone who would like to learn more about the Zonta Club mission and service opportunities, invite them to attend the October 12th meeting.

In support of the Zonta International mission of Building a Better World for Women and Girls, October is focused on the International Day of the Girl. Our speaker is Lori Heenan who has been a Service Team Member for 20 years and a Trainer and Committee Member for 10 years with the Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA. Lori will share some of the challenges girls face and how the Girl Scouts promote girls’ empowerment much in line with the ZI mission.

We are also pleased to have Rep. Tarik Khan join us in support of our Advocacy efforts.  Rep. Khan is the primary sponsor of HB608, a bill written to protect workers from training repayment agreement provisions, a practice used within human trafficking situations for low-pay, high turnover positions.

In response to the suggestion from Suzanne and Maria, we successfully recorded the Pledge of Allegiance at the September meeting. It aired on ABC 27 WHTM on Monday, September 25th. We all wore our ‘Zonta Says NO’ orange sashes in the recording. What a great promotion for the Zonta Club!

Deb Crum, Kathy Gates and Kathleen O’Malley will be attending the Zonta District 3 Governor’s Conference on Saturday, October 7th.  They will deliver the PA themed silent auction basket.

Alice Kirchner, Kathy and Jim Gates and Shannon Hackman plan to attend the Greenlight Operation Gala on Thursday, October 19th starting at 6:00 pm.  The Zonta Club has reserved a table of 8 for the evening. Anyone interested in attending, please register and let Kathy Gates know. The Zonta Club is supporting this event with a sponsorship.

The Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties (DVSCP) Candlelight Vigil is on Thursday, October 19th at 6:00 pm. If you are available to attend this event, please contact Nancy Fodor.

It was great to see everyone at the September meeting. There were 13 members and 5 guests at the meeting at PSU Harrisburg.
