Wildfire Preparedness & Air Quality Safety

Picture

We all know fire is a very destructive force that turns homes and forests alike into ashes. The impact of the loss to fire is devastating to all involved.

There are currently many active wildfires in Oregon. Wildfires are not only causing damage and destruction, but are causing smoky, unhealthy air quality in many areas of Oregon. Alyssa recently traveled to Central Oregon, and the air was smoky due to the fires around the area. Air quality alerts have recently been issued for for Deschutes, Grant, Harney, Jefferson, Klamath, Lake and Malheur counties.

Make sure to monitor the air quality around your home and take precautions to maintain safe air quality within your home. Click here to monitor the air quality index (AQI) in your area.

Additionally, here is some information on how to be prepared for a wildfire:

  • Emergency alerts: Sign up for emergency alerts through your county to get critical information early during events. Click here to sign up for Oregon emergency alerts
  • Be prepared to evacuate: If you get an emergency alert to evacuate your home, don’t wait! Make sure you are prepared and have your “go bags” ready. Be sure you have recently updated and reviewed your emergency preparedness plan.
  • Clear a perimeter around your property: This can slow down the spread of fire and help prevent loss of property. Create a defensible space! Read more about how defensible space works

Pay attention to where the wildfires are in Oregon. Don’t just wait to smell the smoke, be ready in advance. Check out the FEMA Wildfire Hazard Overview Dashboard for additional information.
