July 10 | 2023 PLANTING WITH A PURPOSE Photo: Jasmina81 Last week I talked about brands that give back, and this week I wanted to talk about how you can make an immediate impact by incorporating plants in your yard that serve a purpose. Flowers always add wonderful color to our yards and garden beds, but it's even better when we choose varieties that are low maintenance, come back every year, are natives, and are a great source of food for the pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. By planting flowers in our vegetable gardens, we attract pollinators to our veggie plants which increases pollination and results in higher yields, providing us with more home-grown food. It is always a good time to plant more plants before freezing temperatures arrive, and we have some great options available at the store. ECHINACEA CONEFLOWERS Echinacea comes in a variety of wonderful colors and has numerous benefits to both humans and wildlife. They are perennials (come back every year) that do not need a lot of attention. They thrive in the the summer heat, don't need a lot of nutrients, and provide pollen for bees, nectar for hummingbirds and butterflies, and goldfinch eat the seeds from the dried flower heads. The roots and rhizomes of the plant are used in teas, tinctures, and other herbal health remedies. Echinacea purpurea specifically (we have a few of these varieties available) has immune boosting and anti-inflammatory properties; is anti-viral and full of antioxidants; may have pain relieving effects; may lower blood sugar levels; may reduce anxiety; and may protect against cancer. BORAGE We plant these exotic looking flowers all throughout the garden each year as they not only attract loads of bees, but also parasitic insects that help keep garden pests under control. They are a great companion plant for tomatoes, as they are thought to repel tomato hornworms. It decays quickly after its life is spent creating a nice mulch and adding nutrients back into the soil. In the kitchen, the leaves (when picked young) and flowers of borage have a cucumber taste and can be added to salads, soups, stocks, and brewed to make tea. Borage tea is said to aid in arthritis pain, auto-immune disorders, and pre-menstrual stress. RUDBECKIA CONEFLOWERS I absolutely love these sweet yellow flowers, and so do the pollinators. Like echinacea, the goldfinch love to eat the dried seeds and will help in spreading them throughout the garden and yard. Although not very frost-tolerant, these flowers reseed themselves easily, and I often have to "save" the young plants from the grass before they are mowed down. I just transplant them where I want them for the season and they thrive wonderfully. They come in a variety of heights, shapes, and color combinations. Photos: Eleanor Dietrich GEORGIA ASTER A native to the southeastern U.S., this rare daisy does well in full-sun and attracts a variety of pollinators. Once widespread across our region, it is now hard to come by these delicate and vibrant flowers due to habitat destruction and the spraying of herbicides and is on the verge of federal protection against extinction. TALL PLAINS COREOPSIS Just one of many varieties of tickseed, Tall Plains Coreopsis is a beautiful native flower that has showy yellow and maroon blossoms. As with all the others mentioned, the pollinators absolutely love this plant, and it is another the goldfinch are fond of. In the mornings, I can look out our kitchen window and see numerous pairs of birds feasting on the seeds. We have seeds available that will germinate quickly with our long warm days, and I don't have to replant year-to-year; the birds and the wind do it for me.
