Texas Public Education News

We accomplished great things in 2017!

Here are the highlights:

Democracy

I began 2017 by ensuring all Texans will have their opportunity to address the Texas Board of Education. Prior to my policy change, the Chair had the power to reduce all public comment to 30 minutes.

#PaidLunch

My #PaidLunch efforts paid the outstanding balances of several students across El Paso, ensuring that all students receive hot meals, everyday! Teachers received lunch for the day, too ~ because teaching and learning cannot occur in hunger.

Path to Diploma

Adults who were Texas students during the TAKS administration now have an opportunity to receive a high school diploma, something previously denied. Path to Diploma is the result of many hours of writing with the EPISD team, Region XIX Leadership and all Superintendents. Thanks to Senator Rodriguez for adding the amendment to SB 463.

Texas’ Long-Range Plan for Public Education

I am the only SBOE Democrat on the Committee, elected by my colleagues to serve on the State’s Long-Range Plan for Public Education. The Committee held our first Community Conversation in El Paso on November 2nd. We continue to meet and hold conversations across the state.

21st Century STEM

I commissioned a group of  science educators from across the state of Texas to testify on building 21st century STEM leaders. After several years of controversy, we were successful in removing controversial student expectations, allowing teachers to teach hard sciences.

Bilingualism & Biliteracy

I commissioned a team of Texas’ best bilingual educators. After several months of writing, our students now have the best and most rigorous Spanish Language Arts standards, ever! Texas  teachers are equipped to teach biliteracy to all Texas students.

Hurricane Harvey

One of the greatest things about our community is our generosity. When the Parkland community learned about Dr. Henson's hardship due to #HHarvey, everyone came together to support.

Give the Gift of Reading

Each year, I select an elementary school to gift books to each child. This year, I visited Tornillo Elementary School and gave bilingual books to each student. Click on the image for video.

Comparative Literature - A new ENG IV Course

My Comparative Literature course will be available as an additional option for all high school seniors working to satisfy their 4th year of English graduation requirement. The discussion began in April 2017 - click on the image above (right) to read more.

This new ENG IV course will focus on worldly literature and instill college readiness writing skills.

Mexican American Studies

I have commissioned a state-wide task force of classroom teachers who have created MAS curriculum and are currently teaching the high school course, to create a course to be adopted by the Texas State Board of Education in 2018.

Professors from UT El Paso and University of Houston are working with the teacher task-force to ensure rigor and college readiness.

Review of Social Studies Standards, 2018

The Texas State Board of Education will begin the process of reviewing and streamlining the social studies/history standards, K-12, in January of 2018.

I will be working with my team of Texas social studies teacher, instruction specialists, and university professors to create a side-by-side curriculum to fill in the cultural and historical gaps.  The project will be released along-side the final standards.

What can I do to help?

My district covers over 25% of the state of Texas, over 850 miles along the Texas/Mexico Border. Many of you know that I do not receive a stipend from the state, nor do I receive funds for a staff or an office. I depend on the generosity of those in our community who support public education and great education policy.

From El Paso to Laredo, and scholarships to new libraries,                    2017 was a year of great accomplishments.

I look forward to creating many more opportunities for our students, traveling the district, visiting classrooms, and meeting with parents, teachers, and community in 2018.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you ~ Happy New Year!
