Spring is in the air, which means that the average person is spending more time outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather and warm sun. While it should be a year-round practice, it is especially important to practice adequate sun protection during the spring and summer months when the sun is more prominent. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. In Nebraska alone, it is estimated that nearly 500 new cases of melanoma will occur in 2016.
Skin cancer includes three types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma may appear as a raised pink or red translucent, pearly area that may bleed following minor injury. Squamous cell carcinoma may appear as a growing lump, often with a rough surface, or as a flat, reddish patch that grows slowly and may be tender. Melanoma is typically a pigmented (tan or brown) lesion that changes in size, shape, or color. Any of these skin changes should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist.

On Fat Tuesday at the historic Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, 350 attendees were treated to a New Orleans-inspired night with casino games and an exciting silent auction. The event took in $125,000, all of which benefits low-income cancer patients in Lincoln and surrounding communities with assistance for transportation and medication. With the success of this event, the Foundation is planning a second Mardi Gras fundraiser on February 28, 2017.
