Info and tips for Science Fair Participants!

Following is some information and helpful hints for doing a science fair project.  There is a display outside the school office if you would like to see an example of how to set one up.

The Main Objective: Be Curious & Have Fun!!

Let your child direct the project.  It can be as simple or complex as they want.  It does not have to take any specific form or meet any prescribed requirements.

Types of Projects

Information Based projects

Choose a subject/topic and find out interesting information and facts about it to share with and teach others.  This kind of project would be research focused.  You could also build a model of your topic if applicable.

Doing a Demonstration

Do a demonstration to explain your chosen topic.  For example, how you grow a crystal (you can explain & demonstrate the process then show the final product since it happens over time) or how does a parallel type circuit work vs a series type circuit?  Also include written information on your board to explain the topic and share some interesting facts and information.

Using the Scientific Method

A science fair project can investigate something about the natural world, whether it is chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, or another area of science. Usually, a student starts with an interest in some topic. Next, they need to decide on a question that they could devise a test to answer.

    Here are the 7 steps:

    1. Choose a topic.
    2. Ask a question.
    3. Guess at an answer (Hypothesis).
    4. Design a test for that question (Procedures).
    5. Gather materials.
    6. Test their answer by doing the experiment (Results).
    7. Look at their guess and results and draw a conclusion of whether their guess was right or wrong and perhaps suggest what they would do for further exploration of their question.

    Resources

There are plenty of resources online.  A couple really helpful ones are:

    Safety!

Please do NOT use any corrosive, flammable, caustic or other dangerous materials in your projects or you may not be able to participate in the Science Fair.  Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe!

    Tips and tricks!

    Picture

    - Choose a topic that EXCITES you!

    - Don’t be afraid to try something new, that’s how you learn!

    - Pick a more specific topic to narrow the focus and research.  It will keep you on track.

    - Use a large font for HEADINGS and a font for written work that is large enough to be read from a couple feet away.

    - Have a colourful, eye catching display to attract people to come talk to you and ask about your work.  You could also have a curious question in large letters to draw someone in.

    - You can buy foam boards to create your display at The Dollar Tree for $1.25/each.  We know the store on East Hastings had them but you might want to call before you go in case they sell out.  The Dollar Tree on Hastings in North Burnaby should also have some as they have a large teaching section.

    Power

Please remember that if you are needing power, you will need to choose an alternate source to an electrical outlet.  We only have 3 outlets in the gym & they are all on the same breaker.  We don't want to plunge into darkness partway through the fair!  If it is crucial to your project, please email Angela at [email protected].
