steam museum

We are excited to bring the experience of visiting a science museum right to very own school here in PV! On February 10th, Ormondale’s MUR will be converted into a state-of-the-art hands-on children's museum focused on STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art and math).  With activities suitable for all students, workstations will not only augment our school's existing science and math curriculum, but will also expose our students to high-tech fields of study they may never before had access to.  In addition, our presenters put the A in STEAM by opening up our student's right-brains through activities that encourage divergent thinking.  If you have any questions about this event, please contact Anne Fazioli-Khiari ([email protected]).

SCIENCE FAIR THANK YOU!

THANK YOU to all the parents who dropped in and posted words of encouragement, questions or interesting observations about the boards and projects at this year's Science Fair. It was so nice to see so many colorful post-it’s at the fair! Mrs Rusch truly appreciates all the help contributed this year.

Thursday’s Science Fair Night was a huge success - it was great to see so many families having dinner together on the black top, enjoying a nice evening at the Fair! Till next year!

GOLDEN STATE ROAD WARRIORS BASKETBALL ASSEMBLY

The Golden State Road Warriors (GSRW) Basketball team came to Ormondale Wednesday, January 29 for an awesome assembly.  This was a great way to illustrate teamwork, problem solving and perseverance to our students.   They were so excited to see the skills of these men and were even more excited to watch their teachers try their hand at playing basketball from a wheelchair.  About 25 of our students also got to try it. The MUR was filled with chanting and cheering for the entire assembly.

VIAJANDO EN ESPAÑOL

Ormondale is preparing for the annual school wide event happening on March 13th, "Viajando en Español" - this year we will have a month of crafts and learning about specific countries ("Mes Cultural") leading up to the special day.

Each grade will learn about a specific Spanish speaking country. Students will be able to learn a bit about that country, make a craft, taste some food, play a game, listen to some music and more. Kids and adults are encouraged to get into the spirit by dressing up in cultural clothing and costume on Friday, March 13th.

Volunteers are needed to decorate, bring in a variety of cultural treats for kids to taste, serve and clean up. Parents, household helpers, grandparents, etc. encouraged to sign up here:

SAN jose taiko visits cms

Last Tuesday, CMS students were treated to a PTO-sponsored cultural arts assembly featuring San Jose Taiko.  Along with great performances, the Japanese drummers explained the four main elements of Taiko: musical technique, Kata (the physical), attitude (the mental aspects including keeping a “beginners mind” and respect), and Ki (the energy).   Students learned about how the Bachi (drumstick) creates connection between the energy, the people and the drums.  A few lucky students were even given the opportunity to try out the drums! Thank you to our PTO members for supporting Cultural Arts Assemblies! To learn more about San Jose Taiko, visit www.taiko.org.

stem fair - judges needed!

Corte Madera School  is looking for judges for our 2019-20 STEM fair. The fair will be held on Thursday, February 13 all day with a student and parent viewing from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  This is a large event with over 100 projects that will need to be judged. We are asking you to consider judging some of these projects for us. Some of you all have done it in the past and it has been greatly appreciated!!  Judging will be from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020.

Also, if you work with graduate students, college students or AP high school students, please share this message with them. We are also asking that you share this with other employees or organizations that you work with. Is it so important that we have enough judges so the STEM Fair can run smoothly.

If interested, please click on this link and complete the form.

PVSD FOUNDATION NEWS

FIELD TRIPS - BOTH ON CAMPUS AND OFF

On campus field trips? Isn’t that an oxymoron? Not if they bring fun and educational experiences to enhance the school curriculum – same as the usual kind. Thanks to the generosity of those who donated to the FANFare paddle raise at the biennial Portola Valley Schools Foundation fundraiser last spring, students of all grades enjoyed visits from - and trips to - world-class museums and research centers around the Bay Area. All are part of the FANFare 2019 mission: to Enrich, Enhance and Excite.

On campus at Ormondale, a group called Mobile Education is putting on a STEAM Museum assembly this week that features hands-on learning. In addition, there will be a wellness fair in the spring. Also this spring, there will be a repeat of last year’s Math Night festival, this time at Ormondale.

At Corte Madera school, the Mad Science crew was on campus last month to do experiments with the 5th graders about planets, comets, meteorites and more, and the Lawrence Hall of Science is sending a crew of forensics experts to help the 4th through 8th graders solve a series of make-believe crimes. On top of that, Science teacher Teresa Richard is planning a special day-long science exploration before the school year ends.

For off-campus field trips, a few that FANFare helped fund include the 5th grade trip to the Marine Science Institute in Redwood City last month to learn about the ecosystem of the San Francisco Bay, and a visit to the San Jose Tech Museum in March. In September, the 6th graders went to the Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose, which houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on exhibit in western North America, then attended a Chinese music recital at Bing Concert Hall in January. In addition, the 8th graders took a bus to see the movie “Harriet Tubman” in November.

Vote YES! on P to Protect Portola Valley Schools

We value our high-quality teachers who provide an excellent education to Ormondale and Corte Madera students. By voting YES on Measure P, we can renew expiring funding that today funds 17% of our teachers.  Without this funding, our schools face significant cuts. All Measure P funds stay local to fund ORM and CMS staff.
