President's Message
Greetings! Autumn is particularly enjoyable to me because of the tasty treats, elaborate costumes, and rich colors that go along with the celebrations. The air turns crisp, as the days grow shorter, Nature's canvas paints a masterpiece of color.
The September 11th meeting was a great kickoff to a busy club season of service and advocacy. Please check out the club calendar for a list of the many events scheduled not only by us but events from other like-minded organizations. Please support as many events as your time permits.
On October 5th, District 3 will host a virtual event at 10am to honor the Day of the Girl Child – a Girls’ Vision for the Future. Club member Heather Jackson will present with a short appearance from Golden Z-Club President Katie Lowe. Please plan to attend this event via Zoom. See the flyer in this newsletter for details.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month – Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland & Perry Counties (DVSCP) has put together an action calendar with items for each day for anyone wanting to learn more or get involved in our fight to end abuse and stand with survivors. Check it out at DVAM Action Calendar – Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland and Perry Counties (dvscp.org).
There is still room at the Zonta Club table at the Greenlight Operation Gala on October 17th. See https://www.greenlightoperation.org/events/, scroll down then select 'Tickets'.
And on the same night, DVSCP will host a Candlelight Vigil at the Camp Hill Borough Building at 6:00 pm. See https://www.dvscp.org/event/2024-candlelight-vigil/ if interested. The Zonta Club will host a table displaying our literature that evening. Contact Karen Shirey to volunteer.
Happy October!

Stephanie Spurgeon: PFAs and the need for enforcement
For the past year, DVSCP has been working on an initiative to address the lack of consistent legal consequences for violations of Protection from Abuse Orders. Our advocacy efforts have led us to the offices of several state representatives and ultimately laying the foundation for a bill proposal that will involve tiered sentencing for these violations. As the guidelines currently exist, the consequence for violating a protection order one time and violating a protection order ten times is the exact same thing. This change could be monumental in the lives of victims that are living in this nightmare of ongoing abuse even after obtaining a protection order against their abuser.

One of the top priorities of Greenlight Operation is to educate about human trafficking and equip the public to get involved with counter trafficking efforts. To help with that, they created a free "Introduction to Human Trafficking" guide, available through this link. This resource will provide you with definitions, statistics, recruitment tactics, trends, reporting tips, and so much more as you strive to learn about the fastest growing criminal industry. Additionally, all research is cited, as Greenlight Operation is committed to distributing only reliable and accurate information.
