When I was playing the waiting game with my diagnosis — the first few weeks of blur… blood work, biopsies, urine specimens, medical history, ultrasounds, mammograms — I was out of my damn mind.

A successful fundraising golf event was held at Hillcrest Country Club on June 1, 2017. The golf tournament was in memory of Dianne Sizemore. Her daughter spoke briefly to send the golfers off on a beautiful summer day.
Besides a great nine holes of golf, the participants were treated to lunch, a goodie bag, table favors and a silent auction of fun items. The event raised over $7,000 for the Heartland Cancer Foundation.

The term “cancer survivor” commonly refers to someone who has a history of cancer. 67% of today’s survivors have been cancer free or in remission for 5 years or more and 17% for more than 20 years. Nearly half of survivors are 70 or older.
Survivorship rates have increased today due to screening tests that find cancers earlier such as mammography, colonoscopy and pap test, better treatments and improved management of side effects of treatments. Living life with a history of cancer is unique for each person. Yet a common thread is true for most, that life is different after cancer.
Cancer survivors can face distinct challenges from relief that treatment is over to increased anxiety and fear of recurrence. Being aware of these issues and supporting a survivor goes a long way toward their recovery and quality of life after cancer.
