Photographic Gifts-The Museum Project
| |
During this Season of Giving, Carnegie’s collection is happily being enlarged by gifts from California-based photographers facilitated by The Museum Project, a group of preeminent American artists who express their gratitude for institutional support of photography as an art form by donating select works. Since The Museum Project began in 2012, it has donated over 4,858 prints to 193 national and international institutions’ permanent collections. Recipients have included: Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento); Johnson Museum of Art (Cornell University, NY); J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles); Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City); Seattle Art Museum; University of Michigan Museum of Art (Ann Arbor); and, Weisman Art Museum (University of Minnesota).
To date images have been donated by photographers Robert von Sternberg and Darryl Curran, expanding the contemporary perspectives of Carnegie’s photographic holdings. With more gifts to follow from other members of the group, the Carnegie Art Museum wishes to convey its gratitude to The Museum Project for this curatorial windfall.

recent landscape paintings by Karen Kitchel
This work re-frames traditional landscape imagery. Mischieviously beautiful, the paintings are made of asphalt emulsion, tar, wax, shellac, and powdered mineral pigments on canvas. They are dirty, seductive, and imperfect.
