On May 21, we #TBT to November 1922, when a silent film star was glued into her costume.
In the above walking tour, we discover that in the winter of 1923, Marshall Field’s turned its book department into a temporary theatre to advertise the silent movie The Stranger's Banquet. Like about 75% of original silent films, The Stranger's Banquet is considered lost. But several images of it still exist, including this behind-the-scenes photo in which one of the film’s female stars, Eleanor Boardman, is being glued in to an evening gown.

The reason for the glue? Her character is about to shoot a scene involving a car wreck. The caption under the picture reads, “Boardman believes in safety first. No single thread suspense for Eleanor!” You might say Ms. Boardman was trying to avoid a wardrobe malfunction about 80 years before that term emerged in popular culture. 😀 | |
