The Highlight Reel

Issue #6

Picture

The week of May 18, 2020, CHICAGO MOVIE TOURS explores a sliver of Marshall Field’s (now Macy's) 125-year history with American cinema.

1. Tour: Marshall Field's & the Movies

Many movies and TV shows have been filmed inside and outside Chicago-based department store Marshall Field’s (acquired by Macy's in 2005):

  • My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
  • Mahogany (1975)
  • E.R. (1994-2009)

But in 1923, the store's relationship to Hollywood took a different turn. Click play to learn this little-known history!

2. Costumes, Glue, & Safety First

On May 21, we #TBT to November 1922, when a silent film star was glued into her costume.⁣⁣

In the above walking tour, we discover that in the winter of 1923, Marshall Field’s turned its book department into a temporary theatre to advertise the silent movie The Stranger's Banquet. ⁣

Like about 75% of original silent films, The Stranger's Banquet is considered lost. But several images of it still exist, including this behind-the-scenes photo in which one of the film’s female stars, Eleanor Boardman, is being glued in to an evening gown.⁣

Photoplay (Nov 1922).

The reason for the glue? Her character is about to shoot a scene involving a car wreck. The caption under the picture reads, “Boardman believes in safety first. No single thread suspense for Eleanor!”⁣

You might say Ms. Boardman was trying to avoid a wardrobe malfunction about 80 years before that term emerged in popular culture. 😀
