The school year ended in late June and started up again in August. In June, we celebrated the graduation of four students who went on to 1st grade. The end-of-year fiesta was very festive with great food, dancing and performances by both the mothers and the children! We started the new school year in August by welcoming eight new students. Escuela now serves 25 families who are all active participants in the overall learning experience. The best way to really understand Escuela is through pictures. Once you browse through the photos that follow, you will see for yourself the joy and learning that occurs every day at Escuela.

At the end-of-year fiesta, each child received a certificate and gave us all a huge smile in return. The four graduates received instructions from our teacher, Dulce, on how to dance together for the families.
The day before school started, the families came together again to personalize the wall surrounding the school with murals. The murals were designed by the children and helped create a colorful surround for the playground.
We created gardens this year where the children will learn how important it is to take care of the environment and also to eat healthy food. At the opening fiesta, families planted vegetables, herbs and flowers which the children will water and nurture all year. One of Escuela's neighbors has offered to teach them how to compost, another wonderful skill to learn early.
The first day of school is always special:
