Change Is Needed An important discussion on tobacco products took place at the youth leadership training, Our youth leaders expressed their concerns with tobacco and vaping products.They have shared their experiences with being exposed to vaping as it is being done on school campuses as well as on school buses. These youth leaders are determined to see and make changes as they address the tobacco and vaping concerns they have, as they make a difference, and educate their fellow peers. One of which was the concerns of vaping in schools. In addition to vaping, our Island teens were given leadership tools and identified various skills they would love to acquire in order to make the changes they would like to see. . ITAT AFFIRMATIONS Rebecca Brockbank teaches our youth leaders of the importance and impact of positive affirmations. Know who you are! Positively affirm what you know about yourself to yourself! Live the "I AM" way. " I AM..." successful educated a leader important ...fill in the blank with your affirmative statement and say it to yourself every morning, afternoon and evening. The more you fill your mind with positive, the less room it has for negative. You are in charge of what goes in. Remember, you become what you believe yourself to be. This was re-enforced as Rebecca had the youth write their affirmation on a rock. Each were given a rock to personalize and take home with them as a reminder and to solidify what they affirm about themselves. You are the creator of yourself. Enjoy being wonderful! ITAT Is Ready To Go So Many amazing life tools, information, and resources were provided to our youth leaders. They are geared up, inspired, hopeful and empowered. They are more determined than ever as they walked away with additional power to make a difference. Most importantly, they have many more reasons to avoid harmful dangers; such as tobacco, and have obtained more reasons to LOVE LIVING AND SHARING THE LOVE! TOBACCO FACTS Utah students in grades 8, 10, and 12 were significantly more likely to report every trying alcohol (22.35)) and e-cigarettes (23.1%) than conventional cigarettes (11.9%) More than 11% of students reported current e-cigarettes use, followed by alcohol use (8.3%) and cigarette smoking (2.9%) Use of cigarettes was highest in Tri-County Health District (5.9%), comprised of Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett Counties Use of e-cigarettes was highest in Weber-Morgan Health District (15.05) Youth alcohol use was highest in Southeast Utah Health District (15.35) comprised of Carbon, Emery, and Grand Counties. “We know that alcohol and nicotine can affect how a teen’s brain develops. Use of these products alone or together can ‘hard-wire’ the brain for addiction into their adult life,” said Susannah Burt, prevention program manager at the DHS Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health.'
