She has proudly served the state of Texas and her community for more than 33 years. She was born in Columbia, grew up in Venezuela and later emigrated to the United States She fled Venezuela, as communism took hold and understands all too well, what we are fighting for and against. Devine’s decades of community service began in Women’s Ministry with pregnancy resource centers, and she more recently founded Esther Council and serves as the Director of Operations for the Austin Area Pastor Council. In 2015, Devine began to focus on serving in the political arena. She worked for Don Zimmerman, an Austin City Council Member, and two conservative champions in the House of Representatives: Kyle Biedermann and Briscoe Cain. In addition to serving as Republican Party Precinct Chair & Travis County Republican Party Outreach & Engagement Chair, Devine has volunteered for numerous political campaigns, including her husband’s election to District Judge and to the Texas Supreme Court. Nubia has had an interesting and rewarding journey throughout her life and will share those experiences with Star Republican Women. Her early life under communism provides an inspiring perspective about the values of democracy and freedom. Kathy Hussey, VP Programs Sara's Shorts We Don't Just Do Lunch. I often invite people to join us at Star Republican Women with the promise of great speakers, a lite lunch, and a fun group of women, but that short-changes who we really are!! The month of March reminded me that a lite lunch has never described true Texas women of strength. Susanna Dickerson was born in Tennessee arriving with her husband in Gonzales and giving birth to a daughter in December, 1834. Almaron Dickerson, her husband, was one of a group of patriots who faced off with the Mexican army for the famous “come and get it cannon” of Gonzales and later moved on with the patriots to San Antonio. Susanna joined her husband taking in boarders such as David Crockett, cooking and doing laundry for Texas volunteers. On February 23, 1836, when General Santa Anna arrived in San Antonio, Susanna joined several other women in the Alamo with the Texas troops. Following the fall and death of all the men at the Alamo, Susanna was sent with her young child on horseback, with a note from Santa Anna to General Sam Houston. She passed on that note to the Texas General whom she met in Gonzales, a 75 mile horseback ride, around March 12. She must have then relayed the heroics of the “line in the sand” which Lt Col William Travis drew with his sword, challenging those who wanted to stay and fight to cross. She must also have included how the ill Jim Bowie demanded his bed be moved across that line. Susanna must have inspired Sam Houston with the patriotic passion and courage of a strong undefeated Texas woman, despite her personal grief. Houston must have carried this inspiration to his troops in the battle of San Jacinto, April 21, 1836. She could have effectively inspired the famous cry “Remember The Alamo” with her story rather than be defeated, despite her personal lost. You can hear that passion at any Star Republican meeting after the Texas Pledge and you can see that passion as Star Republican women move in the community of Horseshoe Bay. If you attended our Candidate Forum in February, I hope you caught that passion for our state and our elections in November. If you attend our meetings you will not see nationally defeated Republicans, rather you will see the spirt of involved women with a “Remember the Alamo” attitude that makes me smile. Happy March …. SRW Literacy Committee Chairman Kathy Hussey will lead the discussion about the book. Even if you haven't read the book, you can attend and enjoy the conversation about the book and other topics of interest to the group. ABOUT THE BOOK: The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Huntress and The Alice Network returns with another heart-stopping World War II story of three female code breakers at Bletchley Park and the spy they must root out after the war is over. 1940. As England prepares to fight the Nazis, three very different women answer the call to mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes. Vivacious debutante Osla is the girl who has everything—beauty, wealth, and the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses—but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, and puts her fluent German to use as a translator of decoded enemy secrets. Imperious self-made Mab, product of east-end London poverty, works the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and looks for a socially advantageous husband. Both Osla and Mab are quick to see the potential in local village spinster Beth, whose shyness conceals a brilliant facility with puzzles, and soon Beth spreads her wings as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts. But war, loss, and the impossible pressure of secrecy will tear the three apart. 1947. As the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip whips post-war Britain into a fever, three friends-turned-enemies are reunited by a mysterious encrypted letter--the key to which lies buried in the long-ago betrayal that destroyed their friendship and left one of them confined to an asylum. A mysterious traitor has emerged from the shadows of their Bletchley Park past, and now Osla, Mab, and Beth must resurrect their old alliance and crack one last code together. But each petal they remove from the rose code brings danger--and their true enemy--closer... Kathy Hussey, Literacy Committee Chairman SRW Candidate Forum Huge Success!
