March 2024 Core Virtues News As the March winds blow, the weather begins to soften. So too our March virtues of compassion, faithfulness, and mercy soften hearts and galvanize spirits. This month's heroism section features various men and women who have heroically exercised the virtue of faithfulness to duty. And March is Women's History Month , so we celebrate a woman of compassion and passion: Ida B. Wells. Finally, hats off to an extraordinary modern mercy initiative. March Heroes: Faithfulness to Duty In previous years we've spotlighted a single hero or heroine for each of our March virtues, but heroic faithfulness to duty is our focus this month . In times of disaster, in war, and in friendship, there are those who go the extra mile. Below are some of our favorite selections on faithfulness to duty. Women's History Month: Ida B. Wells Ida B. Wells (1862-1931) was a trailblazing journalist and a courageous "muckraker" whose 1892 exposé of lynchings in the South resulted in the burning of her own press. It forced her to flee Tennessee but she settled in New York, where she continued to spread her message effectively and worldwide. This spotlight is appropriate for grades 4-6. A Modern-Day Embodiment of Mercy "The quality of mercy is not strained" on Mercy Ships . It is proffered in abundance. Teachers may want to spotlight to students the work of an extraordinary non-profit whose "commitment to compassion" brings hope and healing worldwide. Colorado native Don Stephens dreamt of converting one ship to a floating hospital for those in need. Since 1978, the fleet has grown, while he and his organization Mercy Ships travel the coast of Africa, providing life-changing surgery at no cost for the poor: they welcome donations and volunteers.
